@RACHELHARDAGEBARRETT A Welcome From the Editor Last year, I visited Elkhorn, Wisconsin, where I found a kindred spirit in Tereasa Surratt, the visionary behind Camp Wandawega who has transformed an almost-century-old summer camp into a magical slice of summertime. My favorite element of the property may be its “Manifesto of Low Expectations,” which cheekily reminds guests that this is not glamping. I first read about Wandawega (pg. 22) in this magazine and have long been enamored with its blissfully stuckin-time aesthetic. (My visit even ended with warm conversation around a caramel apple pie.) I admit I have my own stockpile of Wandawega-esque finds—point blankets and badminton racquets (pg. 22)—waiting for the day they can outfit the lake cabin I do not yet own, and I firmly believe that if you channel your…

canvas

MERIT BADGE WAXING CANVAS You can thank mid-19th-century sailors for applying linseed oil to their sailcloth, which helped sails catch wind without weighing them down. In the 1930s, paraffin wax replaced the oil (which had a tendency to yellow over time), and waxed canvas became popular with the military for uniforms and, yes, tents. To coat your own cotton canvas with a wax finish (hello, durable dining chair upholstery!), first remove any debris with a lint roller, then warm the fabric with a hair dryer. (This will help evenly distribute the wax.) Rub wax (try Otter Wax, $13; otterwax.com) across canvas in broad strokes until the surface is covered. Work the wax into the canvas with your fingers, reheat, and repeat until fully worked in. Hang in a warm, dry area for…
