DANBO , the cardboard box robot, first appeared as a character in Yotsuba&!, a Japanese comedy manga, and was later produced as an action figure, which spawned a popular Internet meme. “Growing up in Vietnam, I was very fortunate to be in a family that could afford toys for their children,” explains Tam Duong. “Most of my peers didn’t have anything to play with.” “My sister came home and gave me this cupcake, but I found it too pretty to be eaten right away, so I just had to take a shot of it with Danbo,” recalls Duong. “I was holding the camera with my right hand, and my left hand was holding a little stick taped to Danbo’s foot so I could hold him up in the air. For the past several years, I’ve been photographing the construction of an 840-foot stone wall and complex amphitheater by a friend of mine who took up stonework as a hobby. I felt I needed some low-level aerial views, and so decided to look into the use of a quadcopter. Small helicopters with cameras mounted onboard have recently gained popularity and are relatively easy to fly. This new tool for photographers has brought along with it a myriad of controversial legal and ethical problems. In these conversations, the word that has come up more than any other is the word “cheating.” The idea that editing digital images in hopes to bring out their highest photographic potential might be considered cheating bewilders me. After all, the definition of photography is “the art or practice of taking and processing photographs.” In other words, capturing an image with a camera is only half of it. The other half is the processing of that image. Of course, processing means something different than it did back in the early days of photography but,…

the shutter sisters’ great gear guide

Gathering an arsenal of the right camera equipment is important to all photographers—hobbyists, amateurs and pros alike. But what’s included in each collection is as diverse and unique as the perspectives of those photographers. In other words, no two camera bags are alike. No one knows that quite like the community at Shutter Sisters. With a demographic that spans a wide spectrum of ages, geographic locations, ethnicities, experience levels and, yes, even gender—some of our beloved enthusiasts happen to be “brothers”—the variety of gear we carry is quite diverse. From the latest and greatest to the tried and true to the fun and funky, our camera bags are brimming with a plethora of gear goodness. We asked a few of our community members to share their favorites with us, and this is…
