At first, I wasn’t quite sure why my dad was having me crawl around, in the grass, looking for bugs. With a notepad, a pencil and a magnifying glass, it wasn’t a completely unsatisfying way to spend a languid, humid, summer morning in the 1970s. After the last cartoon of the day ended, there wasn’t much else to do anyway. I figured he was just trying to keep me occupied, and probably that was a large part of it.
