editor's comment

Welcome to a special edition of Facility Management, which features the official event guide for this year’s Total Facilities Expo. On a personal note, this is also a significant issue as it is my first as editor of FM. For that reason I hope you all enjoy the read and I look forward to providing FM professionals around Australia with all of the latest news and features in the future. In 2016 the Total Facilities Expo returns to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, where Australia’s facilities management and workplace professionals will come together to discuss solutions that enhance the built and work environment. As the official event guide, this issue of FM includes an outline of the show’s key highlights, as well as a summary of the exhibitors and event sponsors, and…

slippery when wet – avoiding trade waste management issues

You will always remember your first time. The stench, it’s unmistakeable. It’s truly unforgettable – an experience that certainly stays with you forever. No matter how many times you are exposed, it’s like no other. If you’ve never had the opportunity of experiencing the results of an accumulation of fats, oils and grease (FOG), the main contents of a grease arrestor – especially one that has been incorrectly installed or maintained – then thank your lucky stars. For me, my first encounter with a grease arrestor was as a young 18-year-old apprentice plumber. As the novice, I was tasked with resolving the issue, much to my journeyman’s amusement. I’ll save you the graphic details of the extremely smelly and unbelievably sticky greasy waste I encountered, all while confined to a small courtyard…

integrated security systems and their vulnerabilities

Technology is having an enormous impact on our lives. It is changing how we work, how we socialise and how we communicate, and the commercial building space is no different. As security professionals, never before have we had this level of intelligence and information available to us and it’s not slowing down. In some instances, technology that was leading edge a few short years ago is already ‘old school’. While we have seen ongoing improvements in individual product suites, the biggest advancements have come in our ability to integrate disparate control systems. Integration is not new to the commercial property sector and, like a fine wine, it has been maturing over time. It allows us to create better, more efficient and smarter buildings that are greener and more cost-effective to operate. Building…
