editor's comment

In another life, I was asked by a magazine editor to help them find someone to profile for their publication. They were extremely keen to find a woman to feature, having had their fill of pictures of men in suits. I’m ashamed to admit I couldn’t help them. It got me thinking about diversity in the workplace; statistics from the Federal Government’s Workplace Gender Equality Agency show women make up 46.2 percent of the total Australian workforce. There’s no clear reason that we should struggle to find women to promote. While there are no statistics for facility management available, there is a movement to foster greater diversity in the leadership ranks in our industry and, more widely, throughout the property sector. The Property Council of Australia’s Male Champions of Change initiative is…

Technology the driving force in FM growth New research shows that facility management is set to grow over the next 12 months, with technology as the driving force behind it. Results of the Facilities Management Software Survey have revealed FMs across the Asia Pacific region to be forwardthinking pioneers, taking advantage of new technology developments in order to boost their competitiveness and deliver strong results. Leading FM software provider Service Works Global and FM magazine conducted research in December last year, drawing hundreds of responses from across the profession, including facility managers, FM service providers, in-house engineers, contractors and consultants. The results are mostly reflective of Australia, where the majority of respondents (84 percent) were based, but views were also registered from areas such as New Zealand and Asia. FM FM Trends -…

where to now for cafm?

At FSI APAC, we believe there needs to be an industry-wide, ‘big picture’ reappraisal of where we go next with CAFM (computer-aided facility management) technology and how we get there. Technology helped FM establish a position to realistically argue its worth as a business-critical management function. It can allow an organisation to maximise the value and life of assets and, increasingly, by delivering pleasant, efficient operating environments, help to contribute to employee, supplier and customer loyalty. One of the US must-have new tech gifts last Christmas was the voice-controlled Amazon Echo. Hard on the heels of Apple’s Siri and Microsoft’s Cortana (with their touch-screen back-up environments), this Amazon device marks another major step forward in user experience and interface enhancement available to all, in their homes. Such domestic experiences raise the…

where diversity meets performance

“A workforce that has familiarity with the corresponding customer side can deliver better outcomes for that business. It’s a small shift; diversity isn’t about giving women jobs for the sake of it, but rather a commercial imperative for the new landscape we live in.” – Preeti Bajaj, Schneider Electric As vice-president of strategy and transformation at global automation and energy management giant, Schneider Electric, Preeti Bajaj is carrying the torch for women in high-profile positions in facilities management. Born in India, Bajaj came to Australia by herself in 1998. Coming from a different cultural background, she had to quickly adjust to a new environment. She says she’s needed to overcome both overt and unconscious gender and cultural bias to succeed in her role, delivering the company’s strategic action plan throughout the Pacific…
