melbourne leads the world in community engagement

The City of Melbourne was named Australasian and International Organisation of the Year at the International Association of Public Participation (IAP2) 2014 Core Values Awards. It also won an environment category award for its Urban Forest Strategy consultation. The City of Melbourne has demonstrated its commitment to community engagement – involving people in major projects that have helped redefine the shape of Melbourne such as the Swanston Street redevelopment, the Urban Forest Strategy, the Queen Victoria Market renewal and the Future Melbourne project, which portrayed the views of 15,000 people, businesses, organisations and community groups. The Urban Forest Strategy consultation has encouraged the community to become involved in the rollout of the Council’s plan to double the city’s tree canopy by 2040. research finds australians lack ability to identify asbestos risks

A research conducted by Colmar Brunton has found that, while most Australians understand the dangers of asbestos, only a few have practical skills to identify asbestos products and handle them safely. Commissioned by the Australian Government’s Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency, the research surveyed 2362 tradespeople, DIY renovators, real estate agents, landlords and members of the public to uncover their awareness and attitudes towards this hazardous material. The report, which was officially released in November 2014 at the International Conference on Asbestos Awareness and Management in Melbourne, revealed that while all groups believed it was important to be informed about asbestos and its potential dangers, just 61 percent of DIY renovators and 53 percent of the general public felt they were appropriately informed about the risks. Almost one in five tradespeople also described…

australian access control system wins global acceptance

Western Australia-based company CASWA has created a new easy-to-use technology that significantly reduces both operational health and safety (OHS) and business risk associated with industrial equipment use. The new Access Pack technology was first aimed at high-risk equipment but, owing to its simplicity and versatility, it is now being installed on a variety of equipment across a range of industries around the world. Access Pack uses smart card technology to prevent unauthorized operators from using high risk or critical equipment such as cranes, production critical machines, hydraulic power packs, lathes, presses, computer numerical control (CNC) plant and breakout machines, as well as vehicles such as forklifts, diggers and elevated lifting platforms. This improves OHS outcomes, as users need appropriate ‘tickets’ including qualifications, accreditation, training and/or inductions in order to operate equipment. It…

heliatek announces largest biopv façade installation

Germany-based company Heliatek has installed the first HeliaFilm glass façade, based on the Building Integrated Organic Photovoltaic (BIOPV) system, at its headquarters in Dresden. The venue was chosen to particularly demonstrate the efficient harvesting factor under less than ideal mounting conditions that often occur in Building Integrated Photovoltaic applications. A data logging system tracks the films’ and ambient temperatures, the intensity of the solar irradiation and the power generated. The energy generated is used to power the lights inside the office building. AGC Glass Europe, the European arm of fl at glass producer AGC, laminated the HeliaFilms into glass. Heliatek is one of the leading names in production and commercialisation of Organic Photovoltaic (OPV) solar films.
