editor's note

I am proud of our Movers & Shakers feature, which throws the spotlight on those creatives and companies that are shaking up interiors. As a brand, we’re passionate about celebrating their stories and taking readers behind the scenes. This month we meet Cassandra Ellis, a designer-maker who shows just the kind of creativity we are looking to champion. It’s with this in mind that we are launching the H & G Design Awards, with 17 categories covering both projects and products. We hope it will be a true recognition of the latest talent. More news to follow. This issue presents some extraordinary houses and gardens. They include a once-crumbling French farmhouse that’s the elegant side of shabby, and a stylish and original take on Englishness by Sydney designers Tania Handelsmann and…

Q Tell us a little bit about your background. I grew up in the Norfolk countryside and studied illustration at Norwich University of the Arts. I always enjoyed illustrating stories, then at the end of my course I joined a local ceramic studio and began making things in my spare time. These objects became another surface to draw on, and the majority of my degree show ended up being on € ceramics. I love how you can present a narrative in a different way, and how interaction with the object gives the story a new context. “I TRY NOT TO BE TOO PRECIOUS WITH DECORATION, AS THAT’S USUALLY WHEN I’M HAPPIEST WITH THE RESULT” Q How did you begin working on a professional level? When I graduated I went straight into freelance illustration, but…

la vie en rose

It was 25 years ago that Dutch couple Julia and Bert Huizenga first stepped over the threshold of the French farmhouse that was to become such an important part of their family’s life. ‘We had inherited some money and immediately knew how to spend it, having always dreamt about owning a property in France after many holidays there,’ Bert explains. ‘We were constantly annoying our daughters by looking in the windows of French estate agents.’ Having viewed just four other properties, Julia was struck by a feeling of certainty as soon as she saw this farmhouse. ‘We were charmed by the beautiful iron gates and grand pillars and, when we first walked into the house, we loved the way the stone steps had been worn down by generations of feet. There…
