DETAILS COUNT You might be surprised that Peter Goldsmith, who has twice won the coveted “Mr. Top Gun” title, spent just six months assembling and detailing his latest winning entry, an impressive BAE Hawk 100 in Australian Black Panther Squadron livery. Then when he shares that during that time he devoted more than 30 hours a week to the project, you understand how this 1/3.5-scale jet earned a nearly perfect 99 points on the static judges’ table. In this issue, we go behind the scenes with Goldsmith to learn more about his Hawk 100, the challenges he encountered while building and flying it, and his passion for scale modeling. (He also shares the flaw that cost him a point from a perfect score!) This must-read interview starts on page 28. ROCK AND…

World Championship Finesse Nick Ziegler, Moline, Illinois Nick shares that this pattern ship was a true barn find: it’s the one of a kind, 2-meter Finesse that Dave Patrick flew in the World Pattern Championships. Nick writes, “I thought it was a Goldberg Finesse, but it was bigger than normal. So I sent Dave Patrick some photos and he told me it was indeed his plane.” The 11.5-pound plane has honeycomb wings and carbon fiber in its fuselage. It still wears the original paint and covering and has the original retracts and rebuilt YS 1.40 with Hatori pipe, Johnson header, and Dave Brown spinner. Nick upgraded the radio gear and sent the canopy to Dave for his autograph. He adds, “The plane still flies amazing today, and Dave is still flying—and winning!—in…

Keep It Steady We modelers always need an extra hand around the shop. How nice would it be to keep our wing steady when applying sheeting to it, or holding the fuselage still when fiberglassing it, or maybe just holding a piece steady while sanding? I have found that plastic bottles of different sizes that are filled with sand are perfect for holding down various things in my shop. They don’t mar the soft balsa surfaces and give the exact pressure needed for the specific job. Ben Halley, Little Rock, Arizona Credit Card Square I found that my old worn-out and expired credit cards are great for keeping things square. Since the edges are perfectly 90 degrees to each other, the card makes a great square and 90-degree guide. This works nicely for keeping…

peter goldsmith’s bae hawk 100

Peter Goldsmith’s impressive BAE Hawk 100 turns heads even when it’s sitting on the flightline at the most recent Top Gun Scale Invitational, where it earned a nearly perfect 99 points from the static judges—the highest in the Expert class! We wanted to take a closer look at this incredible RC jet, and also talk to the man who detailed and flew it to win the coveted Mr. Top Gun title for the second time. Model Airplane News: How did you get started in scale competition? Peter Goldsmith: My very first scale competition was actually in Australia, at an event south of Sydney. I flew a Sig Skybolt. I had no idea what I was doing; it was a disaster, in fact, a very humbling experience. My first Top Gun experience was…
