the unsung heroes

We all love a Peugeot 205 GTI but, like us, you probably don't need to be reminded how brilliant it is, right? Wouldn't you rather read about some of the unsung heroes of the era? Most makers produced go-faster grocery getters. Some were terrible, a few were remarkable and fewer still were exceptional. Yet all are now rarer than the majority of contemporary exotic supercars. Just 17 Ford Fiesta Supersports remain on the road. A paltry eight Fiat Strada Abarths are taxed and our Colt GTI-16V is the last one. Good job we're singing their praises now, before they're all gone. On the subject of classics that deserve more love, the three AMG C-Classes we've gathered together certainly look like a steal. An M3 E36 will cost a third more than a…

the team’s month

JOHN-JOE VOLLANS EDITOR Went on holiday to Ireland and managed not to buy a car while he was over there. Is he coming down with something? NATHAN CHADWICK ASSISTANT EDITOR This month’s GTA woe involves a blind corner, a grouse and the number plate hanger. Well, what’s left of the latter two... SIMON RUSSELL ART EDITOR Needed some new glass for the Jaguar after an errant stone tried to enter the cabin. Thankfully RH sorted it under my policy JETHRO BOVINGDON COLUMNIST Had the sheer delight of a Fiat Panda hire car equipped with Viking City Tech II tyres. He described himself as blessed... TIFF NEEDELL COLUMNIST Spent part of the month getting a Tesla Model 3 sideways for Love Cars. We reckon he’d rather be in a Lister Storm, though... LEWIS KINGSTON MARKETS EXPERT Treated himself to a Chevrolet Corvette after saying goodbye to the Subaru…

behind the scenes at modern classics...

Stand and deliver Our digital marketing executive Lewis Plumb experienced some non-digital marketing executiving (?) at RADwood. Big thanks to AlfaAid for the loan of the Alfa RZ too. Don’t forget the air freshener We spend an inordinate amount of time on photoshoots cleaning cars (well, Nathan moves muck about). You can’t get the staff these days, so generally JJ rolls up his sleeves. Downsides of home working Nathan’s been busy working from home, so his second greyhound, Lionel, has welcomed him with the kind of smells our man insists he doesn’t produce in the office. Justice served, we feel. Our kind of office space The Audi UK heritage fleet RS2 we borrowed for RADwood found itself with another role – an impromptu interview suite for our hot hatchbacks shoot. Needs a water cooler though.…

contributors this month

JORDAN BUTTERS PHOTOGRAPHER A dark shed full of small cars might not have the lure of some of his recent appointments (he’s the official snapper for Goodwood) but he seemed to enjoy it. SAM DAWSON WRITER Few people take as much pleasure leafing through old brochures as Classic Cars magazine news editor Sam. His passion brought him to the Ford Orion feature. GARETH NEWTON OWNER Most owners who helpfully provide cars for our photoshoots usually only bring along one. Not Gareth, as he brought the C36 and C55 to our Yorkshire-based shoot. ANTONIO DAMIANO OWNER Restoring any ’80s Fiat is a challenge but a Strada Abarth in a month? Happily Antonio managed to get everything sorted in time for our cover shoot.…

radwood uk, goodwood circuit

The traditional British weather may have descended, but it didn't dampen a promising first event in Europe for RADwood, with everything from a rat-look Ferrari Testarossa and a Toyota Paseo to a minty-fresh Porsche 930 Turbo (and everything in between) making the trip to the Goodwood Motor Circuit. While the attendance wasn't quite to Goodwood Revival levels, there was plenty to enjoy. We loved the fact that supercars such as the Ferrari 355 and 911 Turbo would be in the same section as modified Golfs, and that performance heroes like the Lotus Carlton would share equal billing with a stunning (and now rare) Rover 216 GTI. It was also great to see showgoers fully embracing the dressing-up element of the show, especially the chap who matched his exquisite E31 BMW 8 Series…

nec classic motorshow hits 35

The Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, with Discovery, is marking its 35th birthday this year, with a display celebrating 35 years of motoring. The display will show how cars have developed over the past three-and-a-half decades, and begins with a car that will be familiar to long-term readers. Way back in July 2017 we featured Mark McLelland’s mint Vauxhall Astra GTE MkI, and it forms the start of the display. Mark is planning a special pilgrimage from his Kilmarnock home to the Birmingham NEC via the Vauxhall plant in Ellesmere Port, where his car was built. In other news, hall eight is being dedicated to cars and clubs from 1984 onwards, and several clubs will be celebrating big anniversaries. The UK Honda S2000 Owners Club and the 300ZX Owners Club will commemorate…
