Motor Boat & Yachting September 2019

Published by Time Inc. (UK) Ltd Motor Boat & Yachting is Europe's best motor boating magazine. It's also the oldest, with a history dating back to 1904. Our long experience makes our boat tests the most authoritative in the business and means our technical coverage is without equal. Each month we cover the best new boats on the market, cruising areas that are both practical and inspirational, and the latest boating developments and training. Core editorial focuses on boats up to 80ft, but we also venture beyond the 80ft barrier in our monthly Custom Yachting pages.

welcome…

There are thousands of good reasons to buy a motor boat, as a flick through the pages of MBY amply demonstrates, but never has their been a more compelling one than that put forward by reader David Gabriel. Last March he was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer and immediately subjected to a long and debilitating course of treatment, but instead of putting his family life on hold he decided to find something positive to focus on by upgrading his 1980s 38ft sportscruiser to a newer, larger FAIRLINE SQUADRON 58. When the first one he bought was washed off the deck of a delivery ship by a freak storm on its way back to the UK, a lesser man might have given up on the dream but David found another one in…

1 biggest ever canness how

This year’s Cannes Yachting Festival is set to be the biggest yet thanks to a major redesign of the show’s layout. Instead of cramming new motor and sailing boats into the same venue, both types of craft will have their own dedicated sites, creating more space for everyone. All the sailing yachts will now be displayed in Port Canto at the other end of the Croisette, leaving motor boats to fill the space vacated at the original Vieux Port location. The brokerage sector will stay at Port Canto as usual. The two sites will be linked by regular sea and bus shuttle services departing every 15 minutes – visitors simply need to present their show tickets to access these free services. Organisers say that the change of layout has helped create 1,000 linear…

2 new sun - powered catamaran

Portuguese boatbuilder Sun Concept has launched a new catamaran powered entirely by the sun. The 12m solar-powered craft follows hot on the heels of its popular 7m sibling, which has sold 18 units since launch in 2015. Bigger, faster and better able to cope with offshore conditions, the new Cat 12.0 has been in development for more than two years. Initially aimed at the tourist market, it will also spawn a cruising version designed for private leisure boat owners. Measuring 12m long and almost 6m wide but weighing under 7 tonnes, the RCD Category B boat is propelled by twin Torqeedo electric engines from 15kW to 60kW with power supplied by up to 120kWh of lithium batteries. Top speed with the largest engines is over 14 knots and at its recommended cruising speed…

3 sun seeker ‘foiling’ super yacht

Sunseeker has revealed details of the revolutionary new hull vane system fitted to its forthcoming 161 Yacht. Positioned below the stern of the vessel, it is a fixed wing rather than a true foil. It’s primary aim is to reduce fuel consumption and improve seakeeping. It works by creating forward thrust from the upward flow of water under the aft sections of the yacht. This is said to result in a reduced stern wave, lower hull resistance and increased stability at speed. The combined effect of the hull vane and the Fast Displacement Hull Form is claimed to reduce fuel consumption by up to 30%. The 161 Yacht is the largest vessel to bear the Sunseeker name and the first to be constructed out of aluminium. It is being built in partnership…

5 plans for 27 new sunseeker models

Andrea Frabetti, Sunseeker’s new CEO, has announced a major new product development plan that will double the size of the range to 22 models during the next three years. This will be in addition to the usual replacement of current models nearing the end of their production cycle, meaning a total of 27 updated or entirely new models being launched in the next five years. This bold new expansion in product is being funded by a £50 million CAPEX investment. Frabetti commented, “These new models will include new product segments as well as improved differentiation between various lines. To enable this, we are actively developing our existing footprint as well as seeking new facilities and partnership opportunities.” Sean Robertson, Sunseeker’s Sales Director added, “New and exciting products breed growth in this market…
