Motor Boat & Yachting March 2020

Published by TI Media Limited Motor Boat & Yachting is Europe's best motor boating magazine. It's also the oldest, with a history dating back to 1904. Our long experience makes our boat tests the most authoritative in the business and means our technical coverage is without equal. Each month we cover the best new boats on the market, cruising areas that are both practical and inspirational, and the latest boating developments and training. Core editorial focuses on boats up to 80ft, but we also venture beyond the 80ft barrier in our monthly Custom Yachting pages.

welcome…

Us boaters are a pretty resilient bunch but even the most stalwart amongst us might have questioned our commitment when faced with the situation Edgar Peer had to deal with. Having moved his FERRETTI 530 Rose from the South of France to Rapallo, Italy, he was looking forward to many happy summers exploring the area. However, in October 2018 a text from his local boat guardian turned his world upside down. A freak storm had smashed the marina’s outer wall and destroyed the pontoons. Of the 400 boats berthed there 139 sunk while many more were ripped from their moorings. Relatively speaking, Edgar was one of the lucky ones. His boat’s bow line held firm but Rose still took a terrible beating from stray boats and the pounding of the…

THE EDITOR’S VIEW… For a company of its size Fairline seems to be punching well above its true weight. The F//LINE 33 beat the Princess R35 and the Sunseeeker Hawk to win the superboat category of the 2020 Motor Boat Awards and this new TARGA 58 looks like it could wrong-foot the opposition too 1 FAIRLINE’S FIRST BEACH CLUB TARGA Fairline has revealed computer renderings of its most innovative new model yet. The new Targa 58 GTB is the first British built sportscruiser to offer a folding beach club at the stern. A pair of buttresses either side of the oversized bathing platform rotate down, dramatically increasing the size of this water-level terrace. Two sets of teak steps lead down to the beach club from the main deck above while modular cockpit seating that can…

“I don’t want one of those, I want a proper outboard” was my immediate thought when an electric outboard motor was suggested to me. My latest upgrade to ‘Smuggler’s Blues 2’ had been an inflatable tender to give us the flexibility to head for shore for dinner when moored overnight on a buoy on the River Dart, or make it to the beach when we’re at anchor. I bought an Excel 260 Ventura because unlike most, it has an inflatable floor rather than wooden slats, which offers two big advantages. Firstly it makes it lighter (less than 20kg in fact), and secondly it packs down smaller. In fact it fits into the gap beneath the aft cockpit seat so neatly that it looks like it was made to measure. Having…

GREAT EXPECTATIONS Just wondering if John Boyle can supply technical details about his Great Motor Boat Tour from 2011, when he circumnavigated the UK and Ireland in a Sealine S34. I would be very interested to see how actual fuel consumption compared to book figures, how many miles on average per day he travelled and what the total cost in diesel was. I am looking at buying a 35ft motor cruiser and his exploits really showcased what a boat of that size can achieve but naturally my wife wants to know about running costs! Cormac Brady I don’t think I have the fuel figures from that trip to hand – I have changed computers at least a couple of times since then – but I may be able to provide you with…

sealine s430

Narrowly missing out on a launch at Düsseldorf, the S430 will be unveiled during the Palma Boat Show in the first week of May. No bad thing maybe, given the S430’s focus on life in the sun. The S430, which joins the S330 in the sportier side of Sealine’s sportscruiser range, boasts a hugely beamy main deck with open sides, cut out windows and a pair of fabric sunroofs overhead that really open up the helm area and cockpit to the elements. It’s a design perfectly suited to cruising and relaxing in the sun and putting those on board more in touch with their surroundings than the plethora of hard top sportscruisers with more enclosed main decks. The cockpit looks to have a lovely flow to it with a central companionway…
