“I am so tired of patina.” “It’s gotta be close to dying.” “We’re gonna see nicely painted cars any day now.” Those were just some of the comments I heard the other day when the subject of patina came up at a meeting of various editors in our publishing group. Several of them had written editorials about the trend—which they were all pretty sick of—in which they encouraged their readers to overcome their fear of paint. To my colleagues, patina was little more than an easy (and cheap) way out of dealing with a problem, and it was a problem they were hoping to fix. MORE ARVID FEEDBACK I love this mag, from barn finds to restored rarities. It would be a pretty boring magazine if you stuck to just Arvid Svendsen’s definition of muscle cars. I own a 1971 RS Camaro and consider myself a muscle car guy. In my opinion, anything with some oomph under the hood is a muscle car! Keep up the good work. THE LAST MUSCLE CAR, REVISITED First, thanks for the great magazine! It’s always a good day when the latest MCR arrives in my mailbox. A couple of recent stories have been of particular interest to me. In the June 2019 issue, a 1979 Pontiac Formula W-72 was featured in “The Last Muscle Car.” A few months later, the September issue’s Editor’s Note column included Arvid Svendsen’s “Definition of muscle car.” Earlier this year, I added a 1977 Pontiac Can Am to my small stable of classics (my first non-Chevy). I attended high school and started driving in the mid-1970s. During those years, I was driving a 1955 Chevy while my friends drove everything from used muscle cars to new Corvettes and Firebirds. QUARTER-MILLION-DOLLAR HEMI GTX At Mecum’s recent collector car auction in Dallas, the top-selling car was a 1971 Hemi GTX that changed hands for $253,000. Part of the Peter Swainson collection from Alberta, Canada, the rare GTX (one of 19 Hemi GTX models fitted with an automatic transmission that year) had received a yearlong ground-up restoration by Dave Dudek Muscle Cars of Warren, Michigan. Dudek restored two of Swainson’s cars for the Mecum sale; the other, a 1969 Charger Daytona with a 440/four-speed drivetrain, was a no-sale at $230,000. It pays to read Muscle Car Review. One day Michael Lightbourn purchased a copy of this magazine in the airport to read on his flight back home to El Paso, Texas. “The guy sitting next to me on the plane asked, ‘Are you into cars?’” Of course, Lightbourn said yes. Then his fellow passenger said, “I’m just inheriting my grandmother’s 1968 Charger.” Lightbourn eyes got wider as he listened to the story. “It’s all original. She always had it in a garage.
