As a teenager, Ming fought valiantly to escape one of history’s darkest eras—China’s Cultural Revolution—during which millions of innocent youth were deported to remote areas to face a life sentence of poverty and hard labor. Through his own tenacity and his parents’ tireless efforts to provide a chance of freedom for their son, Ming eventually made his way to America with $50 in his pocket and an American dream in his heart. Against all odds, he would earn a PhD in laser physics and graduate magna cum laude with the highest honors from Harvard Medical School and MIT. He embraced his Christian faith and tackled one of the most important questions of our time—Are faith and science friends or foes?—which led to his invention of a breakthrough biotechnology to restore…

It’s my favorite time of the year! August is our annual “Women In Business” feature and luncheon. This year we introduce you to 12 women who are making an impact on Music City in their respective fields. I hope you’ll come to hear their stories in person at the Symphony on August 20. I am going to be honest here: I have so much admiration and respect for Maneet Chauhan, our keynote speaker. Not only is she incredibly talented, smart, and inspiring, she’s hilarious. She is an award-winning chef and owner of some of my favorite restaurants in town. (You really have to try all four: Chauhan, Tànsuo, Mockingbird, and Chaatable.) She also has two television shows, and more to come! Plus, she’s involved in Mantra, a brewery project opening in…

The weekend continues to draw larger crowds as people roam the streets of East Nashville to eat and experience all of the fun. The main highlight of the weekend is centered around the parade, which starts Saturday morning at 9 a.m. Team Tomato invites all to participate with floats that can be pushed, pulled, carried, or worn. cornhole for a cause

Grab a friend and get ready to throw down at the 2nd annual Charity Cornhole Tournament on August 24. This fun fundraiser benefits Camp Horizon, a camp for children who have or have had cancer. Founded in 1983 by the American Cancer Society, this free weeklong camp meets the needs of children undergoing treatment, and even offers an additional camp for siblings of cancer patients. The cornhole tournament, held at Tailgate Brewery, promises to be a fun way to round out the summer. To attend, register your team of two online. Each team will receive two drink tickets, two commemorative koozies, two food tickets, and two tournament T-shirts. Spectators can also donate on the website. The tournament will be played bracket-style, with registration closing August 17. (camphorizon.org)…

drew holcomb

Drew Holcomb is shaking things up with his forthcoming album, Dragons. For the past 13 years, he and his three-piece band, Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors, have cultivated a holistic fan base with their uplifting Americana music and familial life force—Holcomb’s wife, Ellie, is both a frequent guest vocalist of the quartet and inspiration to its frontman’s music. The album is a significant sonic shift from the band’s previous six LPs. Holcomb linked with producer Cason Cooley (American Authors, Ingrid Michaelson) to bedeck his new songs with synthesizers, sampled strings, and, on one occasion, a drum machine. These new, stylized elements give Dragons a cosmic sound, setting it apart from the singer’s all-acoustic discography. And, next month, the band brings the Moon River Music Festival back to Chattanooga for its…
