celebrating a rich legacy

We showed our extensive top 100 list to the team, and asked them to pick the one game world they’d like to live in the most. Chris immediately called dibs on Red Dead Redemption II’s Old West. He said he spends enough time playing the game that he might as well live there full-time. With the final batch of backwards-compatible games now on Xbox One, it’s time to sit back and look at all the games you can play on Xbox. There are so many, it’s making our heads spin – and with Microsoft committing to back-compat on Project Scarlett too, it’s great to think we’ll still be playing that rich library of Xbox titles well into the future. This month, we’re celebrating the three generations of Xbox consoles so far,…

Adam Bryant Staff writer Our resident Master Chief fanatic picked the world of Halo, to the surprise of no one. We suspect he’s already got a full set of Mjolnir armour waiting for him in his wardrobe. Warren Brown Senior art editor Rather than face yet another mag deadline, Warren said he’d rather walk through Hell from Doom. To be honest, it’d probably feel like a holiday to him. Drew Sleep Production editor Drew said he’d happily hop aboard the Normandy SR-2 from Mass Effect 2, if only just to hang out with Garrus, Joker, Tali and the rest of the crew. Dave Meikleham Contributor Our designated driver would happily potter around GTAV’s Los Santos, strictly adhering to the Highway Code. Sound interesting? Check out page 104.…

You can be sure we’re going to be hearing a lot more about Xbox Project Scarlett (p8) over the next few months, and we will, of course, bring you all the news on the next generation of Xbox console just as soon as we get it. This month’s snippet of valuable info comes courtesy of Gamescom in Cologne, where we met Xbox gaming chief Aaron Greenberg, who hinted at the power and performance of Scarlett while revealing a little of the exciting things that Xbox’s recently acquired game studios are up to. Bungie is far from done with Destiny 2, and the studio has revealed details of the game’s future and explains how every single player will shape its world on page 12. Good news for fans of Telltale Games…

scarlett powers up

Xbox games marketing manager Aaron Greenberg has revealed to OXM more about the kind of gaming performance we can expect from Project Scarlett, and it looks as though the next Xbox will go big on CPU – the central processing unit that handles the core performance of the console. To date, details have been scant on exactly what we can look forward to with the next-generation Xbox console. Back in June, Microsoft had offered up a few tidbits of info at E3 in LA, principally the performance priorities the team has set for Project Scarlett. Four times more powerful than the already mighty Xbox One X, according to Microsoft, Scarlett will be capable of achieving framerates of around 120fps, support 8K resolutions and, thanks to a built-in solid-state drive, eliminate loading…

Chris Burke New games are what it’s all about, and that the next console will be focusing its power on gaming performance is really what I wanted to hear. I’m getting very, very excited for this now and looking forward to further announcements! Drew Sleep The Xbox team has been extremely busy indeed. While the promises of Scarlett are enticing, I’m more interested about the new Xbox studios and what they’re cooking up. There’s a lot of talent now under the Xbox banner that’s waiting to be unleashed. Adam Bryant Awaiting a new console release is always exciting. We don’t even know what the real name of the next console is and I have already got that tingly next-gen feeling. I also can’t wait to see what all the acquired studios are cooking up.…

what’s in a name?

While Microsoft is still being tight-lipped about the actual name of the Xbox console that will ship next year, Aaron Greenberg did confirm to OXM that, despite the codename Scarlett, green will still be the primary colour of the Xbox brand. “Green is definitely our brand [laughs]! We’ve owned green for a long time. There’s definitely value in green,” Greenberg said. “So no, Scarlett is just a codename. We will have an official name for the product. I do always love people trying to read into what it means. We did a little teasing with one of our assets where we actually put in the colour code for scarlet. We did it with one of our assets, and fans, of course, found it. But yeah, we’ll share more of the…
