Photographer: Jonathan Irish Location: Redwood National and State Parks, California Equipment: Fujifilm X-T1, Fujinon XF16-55mmF2.8 R LM WR Situation: I had been wanting to photograph the giant California redwoods for a really long time, so a National Geographic assignment taking me to all of the national parks during the centennial of the National Park Service was a dream come true. This was a perfect spring morning among these majestic and beautiful trees. I spent over four hours this day walking along the trail, trying not to get neck soreness from constantly gazing upwards. I was overcome by just how tall the trees are, and I remember thinking that having a person in my images would help show the incredible scale. However, I was alone, and I hadn’t seen another soul the entire morning. So…

In this special issue dedicated to our national parks, we’re excited to bring you inspiration from photographers who’ve explored them extensively. Jonathan Irish spent an entire year on assignment to photograph all of the parks. In “A Year In The National Parks” Irish shares 10 of the most memorable moments from this epic adventure. “I had so many blissful, ‘pinch-me-I’m-dreaming’ moments,” Irish recalls. “In a country as diverse and picturesque as the United States, the national parks represent the best of us. They are the places we hold most sacred, for their purity and jaw-dropping beauty.” QT Luong has also visited and photographed all of our national parks. His book, Treasured Lands: A Photographic Odyssey Through America’s National Parks, contains over 500 photographs taken over the course of 20 years, along…

Magnetic “This is my favorite view from Joshua Tree National Park because it feels as ancient as it does scenic. For this shot, I wanted to capture an otherworldly mood, so I waited until twilight to use a long exposure to create the visual effect of clouds moving across the sky. The ancient tree was illuminated by carefully bouncing light from my flashlight off rocks located close to where my tripod was set up.” See more of David Shield’s work at davidshieldphotography.com. Natural Habitat “Wildflowers in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, is one of the reasons photographers and visitors visit this park, in addition to its famous scenic mountains and wildlife. There are many different kinds of wildflower. Among the prominent ones is the yellow, sunflower-like arrowleaf balsamroot, and they grow widespread in many…
