welcome to the workshop

Never underestimate the power of a proper shed hero. We are always being told that the time-poor fettler has made the fully fledged restorer a thing of the past. We say – pah! The quality and depth of the restored cars that turn up in our email inbox are as good and as numerous as they ever were. This quality is high.So this year’s Restorer of the Year competition is full of glorious goodness. Every car has a tale to tell and all of them would be tin cans by now had the brilliant individuals concerned with their revival not turned their attention to the project at hand.Time to get voting then. Go to page eight and choose your favourite. Alternatively visit necrestorationshow.com/restorer-year-0 and get ready to pass judgement.…

a high standard

The 1959 Standard Ten that nearly disappeared into Ford’s scrappage scheme is now road legal. The DVLA released its V5 as PC went to press - ending a saga that started in late 2017. The Standard currently resides at the Dundee Motor Museum where it is looked after by volunteers and the Standard Motor Club’s Bob Alexander. Now it is to be prepared for an MoT and driven by the PC team from the museum, where the car has been on display for the past year, straight to the Practical Classics Classic Car and Restoration Show with Discovery on March 22-24. At the show it will be the star attraction on the PC stand (No. 320 in Hall 5) where you can come and meet the car that…

pc restorer of the year

We have proudly featured a remarkable selection of your restorations in Practical Classics over the past year. Now is your chance to tell us which one you think is the very best of the bunch – so it can be shown off in style at the forthcoming 2019 Practical Classics Classic Car and Restoration Show, with Discovery, at the NEC, Birmingham (March 22-24). The Practical Classics Restorer of the Year competition celebrates those owners who go way beyond mere classic car ownership. They bring their classics back from the dead. Often little more than scrap, our shed geniuses battle with adversity to return vehicles to stunning order. Each has been a true inspiration. But only one can get the ultimate accolade and be revealed as the winner…

JANUARY 20181968 Sunbeam AlpineWill Goldsmith A Sunbeam Alpine GT for just £150? At that price, it needed total restoration, which Will did to a strict budget and sheer perfection, turning it into a true blue beauty. One of the bravest rebuilds that we’ve ever seen. FEBRUARY 20181970 TVR TuscanEd Keen Keen by name, keen by nature. Despite not having attempted a complete restoration before, Ed rebuilt his TVR Tuscan to professional-quality standards, giving himself just 18 months to do it. We can’t fault the result. MARCH 20181973 Ford Cortina MkIIIBruce McDermott This fantastic Onyx Green machine was taken by Bruce from scruffy and rusty to a flawless state that even a concours judge would struggle to find any fault with. Obsessive brilliance and detail focus.…

scrumptious!

Fifty years on from its chart-topping success, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is being  celebrated on the Practical Classics stand with a stunning recreation of the original car from the film. Master restorer, Richard Skinner, is creating an inch-perfect replica of GEN II, using original studio drawings and body patterns from the builder of the wooden bodies. What is emerging (as we write this, Richard is racing to finish the car in his workshop!) is a Chitty that is as close to the actual roadworthy car from the film as possible. ‘I’ve even gone as far as locating the Afrormosia wood used on the original cars,’ says Richard, ‘Plus the Obeche that is layered in between the planks. Very rare and VERY expensive but this…
