THE CALLANISH STONES are the most popular attraction in the whole of the Outer Hebrides. It’s not just the three sets of stones though, but as many as 20 megalithic ruins within a two-mile radius, with the largest stone circle set up between 2900 and 2600 BC.
Many of these ancient sites overlook the large sea loch of Roag, with its many inlets offering a wide variety of birdlife. On the loch, you can find Greylag Geese and Red-breasted Mergansers, Shelduck, Mallard, Teal and Wigeon. There is a good selection of breeding waders, with Oystercatcher, Snipe, Redshank, Ringed Plover, Lapwing, Common Sandpiper and Curlew. Passage Whimbrel, Sanderling, Dunlin, Knot and Black-tailed Godwit are possible, especially in spring, with Greenshank popping in to feed.
