DESPITE the uMhlathuze Municipality in northern KwaZulu-Natal warning people it is illegal to swim at the makeshift Emayeni Dam at an abandoned quarry in Nseleni, outside Richards Bay, the spot has turned into a popular recreational area.
The land the abandoned mine is on falls under the Khoza Tribal Authority, and the municipality said last week that there were talks to shut down the quarry as it was unregulated for recreational purposes.
However, local business owners have said it had become so popular, it had boosted their businesses.
Siqiniseko Myeza, who runs a mobile kitchen, Engojeni Chills, that operates in Nseleni township, said he made a lot of sales when he went there.
