Twenty-three years ago this week, Carol Wallace—the second woman to run People since its founding in 1974—gave me 15 minutes. I was the twentysomething editor in chief of Cleveland Magazine who’d flown in for an informational interview. I was ready to relocate to New York, where my new photographer husband lived. I had no connections in media, but I’d worked my tail off in city entertainment, arts, crime and cultural journalism. So I mailed 50 cold cover letters, bought a plane ticket, packed two Ann Taylor dresses and saw anyone in New York publishing who’d answer the phone. Carol welcomed me warmly into her grand oak-paneled office and explained that People spoke to people coast to coast and that my background outside of New York was valuable and unique. Ultimately,…

Her trip to Denmark marked her first overseas solo tour since 2017 and highlighted her work in early childhood development while emphasizing her role as future Queen: During the visit she met with Denmark’s Queen Margrethe as well as Crown Princess Mary. The tour came just…
Amanda Bynes is taking steps to regain control of her life. On Feb. 23 the actress’s lawyer David A. Esquibias filed court documents to terminate her conservatorship, which she was placed under in 2013. She’d previously been hospitalized on an involuntary psychiatric hold after allegedly setting fire to a driveway. Now Bynes, 35, “believes her condition is improved and protection of the court is no longer necessary,” Esquibias says. The filing comes after he told People last year that Bynes—who in 2020 announced she was engaged to Paul Michael, whom she met at a sober-living home in 2019—was “doing great,” adding that “she lives by the beach, attends school and is enjoying meditation and…
