Wildlife Ranching Magazine

Issue 4 2019

In 2013, it was estimated that approximately 17 percent of land in South Africa make up the private wildlife industry. Value chains include: • Breeding, which includes high-value and plains game; • Hunting, which includes biltong and trophy hunting; • By-products, such as game-meat, leather products, horns and curios; • Ecotourism, such as photographic safaris, game viewing and trails. Wildlife Ranching magazine content is conceptualised and produced based on editorial pillars that represent the wildlife ranching industry value chains, with a focus on the issues that matter most. In the last 50 years, as a result of human activity, Earth’s natural systems and habitats are experiencing unprecedented levels of stress and destruction. The 2016 International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) International Congress in Hawaii garnered headlines around the world by drawing attention to startling research that showed the world is currently undergoing a mass extinction event. The environmental community has sought to bring the environmental conservation agenda to the mainstream, most notably from the 1992 Rio Earth Summit. While the condition of our environment has been deteriorating at an alarming rate, since then, in parallel a seismic revolution in science and technology has been occurring at blinding speed and increasing at an exponential rate. Human capacity to capture, store and process data has been transformed to a degree…

publishing editor’s note

A focus on strategy was an obvious choice when we considered the 2019 themes for Wildlife Ranching magazine. One of the most effective tools for strategic planning is to use the PESTLE analysis ( P olitical, E conomic, S ocial, T echnological, L egal, E nvironmental) as a guideline to examine opportunities and threats. Technological factors include technological aspects like R&D activity, automation, technology incentives and the rate of technological change. These can determine barriers to entry, minimise efficient production levels and influence the outsourcing decisions. Furthermore, technological shifts would affect costs and quality, and lead to innovation in respective industries. In our lead article, ‘THE BIGGER PICTURE’, Michael ‘t Sas-Rolfes explains that in modern society one of the greatest and fastest potential game changers is advances in technology. Michael further states:…

word from the executive editor modern science and technology

The Industrial Revolution was and is one of the most important events in human history and dramatically transformed life for people throughout the world. The First Industrial Revolution began in Britain in the latter half of the 18th century and came with the understanding of the power of steam. With it came the development of the steam engine that changed the face of our world, reducing the need for human labour with machines in mining, transport, textile manufacture and agriculture. Further consequences were the urbanisation of the population and the formation of the monied middle class. The Second Industrial Revolution was approximately 100 years later and ended with the First World War. The focus was on the improved processes in steel production, advances in electricity production (Thomas Edison and his incandescent light…
