Me now: I love painting models! It may be my favorite part of a build. Me two decades ago: I hate painting! No matter what I do, something goes wrong. The paint is too thick. The paint is too thin. It bled under the masks. And where did this grainy surface come from? These internal conversations have been edited for space and to remove a few well-chosen expletives, but the gist is there. No matter how proud I was of the detail I put into a model, whether scratchbuilt or aftermarket, my painting consistently thwarted my modeling. My problems became even more apparent when I started attending shows and meetings and seeing the beautiful finishes on the models.
