THE SHAPE OF WATER
There are innumerable songs, poems, movies, and other art forms that exalt the virtues of living by the water, and nowhere do those praises ring louder than here in Florida. Flanked by the Gulf and the Atlantic, Floridians are never too far from waves and sand—not to mention canals, lakes, bays, and rivers—and although the threat of virulent hurricanes every year is always looming, we wouldn’t have it any other way. My own perch on Brickell Key faces south over Biscayne Bay and despite the fact that I’ve opted to evacuate twice as ominous storms approached, the thought of living anywhere else quickly dissipates the moment I step out on my balcony, take in the view, and breathe in the salty air.
