I made the greatest Instagram mistake of my life in the summer of 2014, and I have yet to recover from it. We were shooting Taylor Swift and Ina Garten at Ina’s place in East Hampton because Taylor loves Ina and Ina loves Taylor and we thought it would be fun to get them together. At one point, Taylor took a selfie with Ina and asked me how she should tag the magazine in her post. It was a simple question with an unnecessarily complicated answer: The magazine is part of Food Network’s Instagram feed, so we don’t have a separate account, and I had only one personal account at the time, which I kept private because I figured most people wouldn’t want to see pictures of my kids’ first-day-of-school…

No need to look polished. I get more likes when I post my own food (like the pasta on top) than when I post a professional shot from the magazine. Everyone knows the difference. Kids boost ratings! I’ve noticed that when I stick one of my kids in a food photo, I get about 40 percent more likes. Try putting people in there sometimes. People like personal stuff. An old shot from my wedding and this picture of my husband and kids in Paris are two of my best-performing posts of all time. Go figure. Coconut cake wins.
