4x4 trends of the ’80s

The 4x4 world in the ’80s was a tad different than it is today. This was driven home when I found a photo album I put together in 1989 after attending the 4-Wheel & Off-Road Jamboree Spring Nationals at the Winnebago County Fairgrounds in Pecatonica, Illinois. Anyhoo, I think it was 1989. Could’ve been 1990. I’m not sure because I’m getting old and my memory is foggy to some degree. And the photos aren’t stamped with the date. Yeah, this was long before metadata-ingrained digital photos. What I clearly remember, though, is that it was my first time working with staff from the 4WD magazines, which was a pretty big deal to a farm-residing, 4WD-focused, wannabe journalist. I offered the use of family pastureland to 4-Wheel & Off-Road magazine Editor Steve Campbell…

the top 5: if you’re building a 4x4, then these should be the first items on your list

I was listening to my buddies Verne Simons and Trent McGee on a podcast the other day, and one of the hosts asked them, “What’s the best off-road upgrade you’ve made to a 4x4?” I won’t divulge their answers because in my opinionated opinion, only one of them answered correctly. Since I started in this business over 20 years ago, I’ve built more than two dozen of my own 4x4s, and that’s not counting the full-bore magazine or video projects I’ve been involved with. So, when it comes to what gets you the biggest off-road bang for your buck, I’ve definitely curated a formula that at least works for me, and more than likely will for you, too. Here, in something of a running order, are my top five off-road upgrades…

DODGE PROJECT I saw your article Firing Order: Old 4x4s For The Win! (Nov. ’20) and it sort of hit home. I started my off-road adventures back in 1963 with a trip to Baja. Back then there were no paved roads from Ensenada south, which was fun, but hard work. Over the years, I have had Land Rovers, Dodge Power Wagons (civilian and military), and now a Jeep JK. My present project is a ’41 Dodge WC-22 body on a ’52 Dodge M37 frame and running gear. I removed the rear spring perches, flipped the axle, converted to disc brakes, and welded the spring perches back on the top of the axle. The rear driveshaft now attaches to the parking brake flange on the transfer case. The engine I’m using is a…

SNOW SURPRISE HERE Here are some chilling numbers. Between 2014 and 2018, nearly 25 percent of Alaska’s 307 driving fatalities were caused by snow and ice, making it the state with the most winter weather-related driving deaths. North Dakota comes in Second with 12.5 percent of its fatalities attributed to slippery conditions, with Wyoming, Minnesota, and Vermont rounding out the top five. Herculean 6x6 Rezvani Motors has released its latest creation—a six-wheel-drive Jeep-based mega truck with a list of options fit for mob boss and gearhead alike. Motive forces come from a 1,300hp, supercharged 7.0L V-8 based on the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon. Other FCA-sourced engine options are available, including a 285hp 3.6L V-6 and a turbodiesel 3.0L V-6 with 442 lb-ft of torque, but we’re betting the 7.0L will be a bestseller.…

SLIM TENT At about half the width of traditional rooftop tents, the 24-inch-wide Thule Tepui Foothill can comfortably fit two adults while preserving space atop your vehicle for other adventure gear. The tent sits 9.5 inches above the roof rack to maintain vertical clearance and the intuitive design allows for one person to deploy and repack the tent with relative ease. Amenities include a high-density foam mattress, optional 310 thread count fitted sheets, an insulator for colder nights, and more. INFO: Thule, 800/238-2388, thule.com DOUBLE DUTY Does your ’84-’01 Cherokee or ’86-’92 Comanche need new dual-rate coil springs? Look no further than Skyjacker! The first rate gives a comfortable ride on the highway while the second rate, which is only engaged after compression of the first rate, allows for control and stability when…

the 2020 ultimate adventure long range jeep

The 2020 Ultimate Adventure Long Range Jeep (UALRJ) is a nod to the first mass-produced off-road vehicle that may well have started the whole off-road lifestyle in the ’50s and ’60s: the World War II jeep. Specifically, the UALRJ is a nod to the SAS jeeps used in the North Africa Campaign of WWII, which encompassed parts of the northeastern Sahara Desert along the borders of Libya and Egypt. These jeeps, and the hearty group that staffed them, were off-roading before that was even a thing. Their exploits are those of legend and inspired the Rat Patrol television show (check YouTube). Their iconic, sand-colored paint and stripped-down nature are only part of their unique look. Loads of fuel, ammo, and water and cowl-mounted machine guns made this ragtag military group…
