Last year, many people were happy to see Fernando Alonso complete the second leg of his motorsport triple crown quest at Le Mans. He was a key part of the victory and it was fine reward for Sebastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima, both of whom had lost out in 2016 in one of the most dramatic finishes in the history of the 24 Hours. WEC Aston Martin is billing its first bid for outright honours at the Le Mans 24 Hours since 2011 as a David-versus-Goliath confrontation. f1 rules for 2021 delayed

FORMULA 1 Formula 1 teams and series chiefs have agreed to delay the presentation of the 2021 regulations until October, following a summit meeting last week joined by world champion Lewis Hamilton. The FIA had invited teams to a get together at its headquarters to try to break the deadlock over the signing-off of plans for the 2021 rules overhaul. While there had been some support for draft proposals presented to teams before the recent Canadian Grand Prix, there remained cause for concern about several areas. Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto (above, with Christian Horner) had suggested that the rules were “really green and not mature enough to be voted on”. FP1 COUNTS FOR SUPERLICENCE Formula 1 practice sessions will count towards a driver’s bid to gain a superlicence from 2020. Anyone successfully completing 100km during a free practice session will be granted one additional point per grand prix weekend, as long as they do not pick up any licence penalty points. The number of points that can be earned from free practice sessions will be limited to 10 across three seasons. A driver currently needs 25 points to take part in FP1, but 40 are required for a full superlicence. The women-only W Series plus Euroformula Open have also been added to the series qualifying for points. ferrari asks for review of vettel’s canadian penalty

FORMULA 1 The Ferrari Formula 1 team has lodged a request for the FIA to review the decision to punish Sebastian Vettel at the Canadian Grand Prix. Amid ongoing unhappiness over the five-second penalty that handed a Vettel victory to Lewis Hamilton in Montreal, Ferrari wants the FIA stewards to look again at the verdict, which held that Vettel rejoined the track in an unsafe manner and forced Hamilton’s Mercedes off the circuit during their lead battle. Although the sanction could not be appealed under the FIA’s rules, the governing body’s International Sporting Code does give competitors the option of a post-event review of decisions, providing new evidence that was not available at the time has come to light. LE MANS 24 HOURS The Keating Motorsports Ford GT that took honours in the GTE Am class of last weekend’s Le Mans 24 Hours has been stripped of its win in post-race scrutineering, with the verdict announced after Autosport’s race report (on page 31) had gone to press. Owner-driver Ben Keating, Jeroen Bleekemolen and Felipe Fraga had taken their Ford, the first to be raced in privateer hands, to a popular triumph after fending off a late challenge by the Project 1 Porsche in the final two hours. But their efforts proved to be for nothing when ACO technical delegates found the car’s fueltank volume to be 96.1 litres, 0.1 over the capacity prescribed by the GTE Am Balance of Performance.
