1 First, I think about a patch I want to make. Then I use a pencil and paper or my tablet to sketch out my design. 2 I draw the design again on a piece of hard felt. 3 I pick out the beads I want to use. I put them on a special mat to keep them from rolling away. 4 I sew the beads onto my drawing. You’ll need: • 750 mL (3 cups) shaving cream• 250 mL (1 cup) glue• 250 mL (1 cup) flour• Food colouring or tempera paint• Large mixing bowl• Small bowls or cups• Sandwich bags with small hole cut into one corner or icing bags What to do: 1 Stir the shaving cream, glue, and flour together until bubbles begin to form. 2 Separate the mixture into small bowls and gently stir a few drops of food colouring or paint into each one. 3 Scoop each mixture into an icing or sandwich bag and squeeze it out to make a picture! You’ll need: • Water• Blue and yellow food colouring• 180 mL (¾ cup) water• Tall clear glass• Clear bowl What to do: 1 Fill the bowl about two-thirds full with water. Add a few drops of yellow food colouring. 2 Fill the glass with water and blue food colouring. 3 Place the glass into the bowl. 4 Look through the side of the bowl. What colour is the water in the glass? How it works When yellow and blue meet, they make a new colour: green! The blue water in the glass looks green when it is sitting inside the yellow water. The Banig Festival is today! Karina wakes up early, excited to go to town. This year, her nanay has woven a banig. It will be joined with others as part of a contest for the world’s longest handwoven mat. Karina really wants to win! She goes to the veranda and sees Nanay already at work, weaving dried leaves and reeds to put the finishing touches to her banig. “Nanay!” Karina exclaims. “The banig is so beautiful.” “Thank you, Karina,” Nanay says. “It’s almost done. Would you help me a little?” They work side by side and then roll up the banig when they are done. It’s time to get ready to go. They pack their kariton, or cart, for the festival.
