Mention the Triumph Stag in mixed motoring company, pause for breath and you’ll almost certainly have someone chime in with a well- worn version of the old, ‘Don’t they always overheat?’ line. Like the thirst of the Jensen Interceptor and the deathwish oversteer of a Porsche 911, these nuggets of received wisdom cling to certain cars forever, often obscuring the full picture. With the Stag reaching its 50th birthday this year, we decided to colour in that picture with some fresh insight. ‘it feels like it wants to take off’

Bristols as far as the eye can see. A red 406 nestles next to a more recent Blenheim, while a Cambridge Grey 410 burbles across the yard of marque specialist Spencer Lane-Jones. Upright yet swept back, one car stands out even among this cluster of curios – the Bristol 401. Built between 1949 and 1953, this two-door established the marque’s reputation and accounts for more than 600 of the 2500 cars sold over Bristol’s seven-decade history. There’s growing interest in Opel Mantas – hardly surprising when you compare their prices to the much more numerous fast Fords of the same era. In June Anglia Car Auctions sold a lovely ‘86 black GTE coupé with four owners and only 55,000 miles for a very respectable £15,660. Then in July Charterhouse Auctions secured a brave bid of £3500 for a very tired and sorry-looking ‘85 GSi in white that needed absolutely everything. Anglia Car Auctions is currently offering an unsold ‘83 1.8 GT in red with a warranted 13,000 miles from new for £14,500.
