Andrew Roberts’ story marking the 60th anniversary of the opening of the M1 (p142) was a good excuse to trawl the archives, and this fabulous shot taken through a car windscreen near Luton, Bedfordshire, in May 1960 immediately caught our eye. The only problem was that there was no caption to identify the car. After extensive research – during which an A55 Cambridge MkII was ruled out because the speedometer needle is at 80mph with more to come! – we reckon that it’s an Austin A99 Westminster, though we are ready to stand corrected. Just like the M1, the A99 took a bow in 1959, its Farina styling concealing lusty straight-six power that made it a natural for the new motorway, which cost £23million to build and was opened by Transport…

Such is the inextricable link between man and machine, it was almost as if the Queen had swapped Buckingham Palace for a self-built Grand Designs eco lodge on the Hebridean archipelago. Or Claridge’s had thrown out cucumber sarnies, scones and cake in favour of serving pizza, chips and deep-fried Mars bars for Afternoon Tea. For as James Bond returned for his 17th outing in 1995’s Goldeneye, not only was 007 played by an Irishman (albeit a pretty suave one, with a transatlantic twang), but he was also driving a… a… German car? To add insult to injury, it wasn’t even a spicy M but a tame Z3. The Goodwood Revival’s name seems to become more appropriate every year. Racing is certainly revived at Goodwood, and the near-mystical allure for some of the world’s most versatile drivers is, too. Remarkably, later generations are able to say “I saw Tom Kristensen drive a 250GT SWB at Goodwood once” just like their grandfather could of Stirling Moss. And the sense of wonder is the same – though the lap times are quicker and the cars safer. Perhaps it was the weather from 13-15 September, the brilliant sunshine and clear unbroken blue sky, but spectators are transforming the venue better than ever, too, making for quite a sight as swarms of tweed, overalls, round sunglasses and trilby hats stream down the steps from ‘Over the Road’. Walking around the Revival Car Show is the perfect way to escape the crowds and delight at the diversity of classics that arrive each day. From vintage voiturettes to muscle cars, the range never ceases to amaze. Restoration specialist Walter Heale’s spartan Amilcar G-type with straight-through exhaust and no mudguards or lights contrasted with a Ferrari 250GT PF Coupé, carrying the appropriate registration 250 PF.
