OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN Finds New Ways to Fight Cancer As she continues to battle cancer for the third time, Olivia Newton-John is raising money to help find a cure with the help of a little Greased lightning. The outfit she wore for the “You’re the One That I Want” number in 1978’s Grease was recently auctioned for more than $400,000, with the proceeds going to the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre in Australia. The jacket went for $243,200, while Spanx founder Sara Blakely paid $162,000 for the pants. (She plans to frame them at the company’s headquarters in Atlanta.) That’s not the only benefit Olivia, 71, has gained from her health struggles. “When you have the cancer diagnosis, it just makes you more grateful for every day,” she tells Closer .…

still angelic at 74

Charlie’s Angels is back in a new incarnation (see page 32), but one of the franchise’s original stars, Jaclyn Smith, has never gone away. “What’s interesting is what a winning concept it is and how it can repeat itself in different ways,” says Jaclyn, 74. “The power of women standing together is very appropriate today.” Jaclyn has always been a powerful woman. The only actress to remain on the show through Charlie’s Angels’ entire 1976–’81 run, she entered the business world in 1985 with her pioneering collection of women’s clothing for Kmart. And she triumphed over adversity in her personal life, beating breast cancer and finding happiness as a wife, mother and grandmother. “I really feel the fountain of youth is inside, not out,” she says. “I really feel my best…

i’m thankful for my family

As Thanksgiving approaches, Valerie Bertinelli often takes stock of her life. The former One Day at a Time star, who has found a second career as a TV chef on Food Network, admits she’s grateful for every day she gets to spend with the people she loves. “I went through a period where I wasn’t as happy,” admits Valerie. “[But] in just the last few years, I would reframe it as creating the next chapter of my life.” For Thanksgiving, the actress and her husband of eight years, financial planner Tom Vitale, open up their home and invite family and friends over to celebrate. “It’s more about coming together to share conversation than it is about consuming a meal,” says Valerie, whose holiday guests often include her brothers and their families,…

valerie’s 5 tips for avoiding holiday weight gain

1. “Be aware [of what you eat] and stay focused on making healthier choices,” she says. 2. When you want to treat yourself, “take a smaller portion.” 3. “Listen to your body,” says Valerie. Stick to lower-calorie foods the day after a big feast. 4. Add extra exercise to your holiday routine. “You have more days off, so you have more time to go to the gym and be active,” she says. 5. Resume your normal, healthy diet as soon as possible. “It’s not a bad thing to stop something and come back to it,” she says. “You’re never a failure.”…
