enjoy your break!

“Don’t beat yourself up about everything you didn’t get to do. No, now’s the time to spend time with family and friends…” Can you believe we’re in the home stretch of yet another year? I don’t know whether it’s because we’re getting older, but it feels as though January and December shift closer together by a few days each year. And now, as the year draws to a close, you also wonder what happened to all the plans you made at its start. I was more than ready to hitch a caravan and explore Botswana with my family and some friends. But hey, you know what they say about the best-laid plans. Maybe next year… Just don’t beat yourself up about everything you didn’t get to do. No, now’s the time to spend time…

Grahame wins a cooler bag worth R220. Whether you’re a camper, fisherman, or sports fan next to a cricket pitch; this cooler bag has room for luch box and a 1,5 ℓ cool drink bottle. The lid also has space for a coffee flask. The interior is lined with PVC, which makes it easy to keep this bag clean and hygenic. The bag has a short strap that reaches over the top and attaches with a Velcro strip, and also a longer shoulder strap if you’re going to carry it over longer distances. It’s an ideal picnic accessory or a padkos bag for a road trip.…

Cruisers rule the Sahara I read the comments about Land Rovers in the October issue with great interest. When I think of this iconic vehicle, its dedicated owners forever tinkering under the bonnet come to mind. I have toured the Sahara many times with tour operators, and here Land Cruisers rule without a doubt. I estimate they make up a good 90% of the total number of 4x4 vehicles. At one point I asked a tour operator why they use Land Cruisers rather than Land Rovers, and his response was: “Land Cruiser est plus solide” – the Land Cruiser is stronger. So it is clear that Land Cruisers are considered the preferred workhorse in the desert because their power and are more reliable than their British counterpart. In these old French territories, you don’t…

comment of the month!

It seems the end has come for the Malgas pont, which has been pulled across the Breede River by hand for a 150 years. Just like so many others, Tewis Prinsloo has also been on it. “That’s right, I’ve also been on the pont. We even helped get it to the other side. We still pulled the cable by hand; that was a good 20 years ago. The nostalgia around this ferry will always remain with me, but I assume the new one will be safer with a greater loading capacity. I’ll have to go and try it out.”…

second nature

Lord of the skies When everything comes together and you spot a winning pic, your camera is the first thing you reach for. That’s exactly what Juanita Loubser from Paarl did. “I shot this bateleur at the Rooibrak waterhole in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. It was late afternoon and it was sitting basking in the rays. I was seated on the passenger side as my husband, Nico, slowly drove closer to the bird. As we got closer, I took the photo through my husband’s open window. My camera was in automatic mode, I find that works best for me when we’re moving.” This bateleur looks as though he’s waiting for the photo, but Juanita couldn’t have captured the moment any better. The secret lies in how she uses the static background to place…
