your pictures are worth their weight in salt

I have a friend who has that rare ability of blending idioms and phrases to come up with bizarre, and often hilarious, new ones you wouldn’t find in any dictionary. “You can’t teach an old leopard new spots,” was a recent one when he just couldn’t quite get the hang of how to make a new gadget work, and blended teaching an old dog new tricks with leopards who can’t change their spots. But put him in an outdoor shop where he’s in his element, and he’s “like a kid in a china shop”. This phenomenon actually has a name, I found. It’s called a malaphor, which is itself a blend of the words ‘malapropism’ and ‘metaphor’. I’m no language purist, and actually enjoy it when someone says something unintentionally funny –…

how i got bowled over by caravanning

Three years ago, I started playing bowls, and it wasn’t long before a friend at the bowling club invited me to a camping weekend at the Lekkerbreek resort near Mookgophong. I camped with my tent… and in the meantime got totally hooked on the balls. If I don’t play matches on weekends, I play every day after work. I also started visiting Lekkerbreek often… and then took a big step: I bought my first caravan, a Sprite Swift dating back to the late nineties. Until then, I drove a Ford Bantam, but it was time for a proper towing vehicle that could hook up the Swift. I went looking for a bakkie – not using the Internet, but driving from dealer to dealer. And that’s how my path crossed with that of…

uncle jan and his very broken car

In the late 1950s, I experienced an incident with my school friend Jannie Barnard that I remember to this day. It was a Saturday and Jannie’s father, Uncle Jan, went to trade in his car for another. Jannie and I went with him to Motortown in the long, straight Jules Street in Johannesburg. Uncle Jan was a big, strict man with a thick gray moustache and he was going to get rid of his Vanguard, a “rubbish English” car. The truth of the matter was that Uncle Jan had been promoted to superintendent and his wheels no longer fit his reputation. His blue Vanguard was no longer good enough, but the car also has a problem or two. When you geared down from third to second gear, the gears would grind and…

too cute for words, however…

Bush Lapa’s Geitjie is suited to a single person or a couple wanting to get away from it all with as little extra weight as possible. It comes with a full kitchen and work surface, and you can tow it with a small hatchback. Our Facebook friends have their say… Kobie Coetzee We used to own a Bush Lapa Boskriek, and it was an absolute treat. Would buy one again as it’s a most fantastic camper trailer. Andre Taljaard Nice, but it’s definitely too expensive. I’d like to know what justifies that price. Marthie Engelbrecht Too cute! Maybe I’ll order one for myself. Follow @wegrysleep on Instagram and mark your photos with #wegrysleep, and we might repost them on our stream or feature them here. Annemarie Geldenhuys When it’s loaded to capacity, it’ll be a lot heavier. A car…

awd vs 4wd

Recently, I was involved in a conversation regarding all-wheel drive (AWD) versus four-wheel drive (4WD). The conversation brought home some interesting points and highlighted the fact that the difference between AWD and 4WD is an issue that elicits many divergent opinions. Mainstream 4WDs are vehicles that are either part-time or full-time 4WD. An example of a part-time 4WD would be the Hilux bakkie. On road, the drive mode is 2WD. Going off-road allows you to shift from 2H (2WD high range) to 4H (4WD high range). When faced with steep climbs or very rough, rocky terrain, you could shift to 4L (4WD low range). Shifting from 2H to 4H or 4L engages the transfer case attached to the gearbox. The transfer case locks 50% of the drive to the front prop…
