ILI HIDALGO-NILSSON IS HAPPY every time she comes down the stairs in her Atlanta home and sees her kitchen, because it reminds her of her family background. “The backsplash tiles were definitely the starting point of the design because they relate to my Spanish heritage,” says the architect and designer, who spent her childhood in Puerto Rico and whose ancestors came from Spain. Ili researched dozens of possibilities before deciding on these Moorish-inspired concrete tiles. The tiles’ bold pattern and navy-and-white color scheme were the starting point for the room’s entire look. The 1990s-era kitchen didn’t always have such a lively persona. Ili bought her townhouse for its 12-foot ceilings and plentiful windows. The kitchen, however, was dark and needed a fresh start, so she gutted it. With the backsplash tiles…

IT WAS THE LOCATION, not the layout, that sold Jennifer and Lenny Hochschild on this 66-year-old home in the San Francisco Bay area. The large tree-lined lot off ered plenty of space for gardening and gathering outdoors. Indoors, a to-thestuds makeover was the solution for everything else. Architectural designer and project manager Jen Tidwell had the job of fitting in everything the Hochschilds were looking for in a kitchen: an efficient, open layout that accommodates both cooks and kids, a combination snack bar and baker’s island, professional appliances, flooring that will take abuse and require little care, and a bright, modern farmhouse vibe. Tidwell tackled the layout first by moving the kitchen to the opposite side of the home, creating better access to vegetable gardens and adjoining gathering spaces. The work…

our favorites Starring Role Dive into color with bold cabinets. SATURATE Add visual weight with Shaker-style cabinets coated in a rich royal blue. Repeat the color on the island for an even more striking effect. Shiny black barstools and a dark metal range hood complement the cabinetry without competing for attention. ACCESSORIZE Nautical-style pendants in a copper finish illuminate the island and bring a sense of age to the new kitchen. Glossy cream-color backsplash tiles and glass-front cabinets reflect light to brighten the space. CONTRAST Balance bold blues with the warmth of wood. Butcher-block countertops and reclaimed wood flooring pick up the tones of the copper lighting and prevent the kitchen from swaying too cool-toned. Cobalt blue barstools draw attention. • A watery hue dresses up cabinetry. • A gold-lined mirror amplifies royal blue walls. • Sky blue appliances…

“SHE WANTED THIS ROOM TO REFLECT A CERTAIN SENSUAL SOPHISTICATION—Old Hollywood glam mixed with a little Marie Antoinette,” says designer Krista Watterworth Alterman of the client who hired her to design the 400-squarefoot master bath she shares with her husband in their Parkland, Florida, home. The goal was to create an elegant, inviting space that would read like a timeless love story—a reflection of the couple’s own old-fashioned romance. The narrative opens with a damask wallcovering of silvery gray and white, which envelops the room in age-old character. Damask’s association with luxury stretches back to the Middle Ages. “It still represents that luxurious sensibility, so it was the perfect backdrop,” Alterman says. With that soft and understated foundation in place, the designer turned to quiet materials that make a striking impact.…
