checkpoint to checkpoint

AT ALL TIMES, I'VE TAKEN THE SAME APPROACH AS THE ONE I TAKE ON THE TRAILS: CHECKPOINT TO CHECKPOINT, ONE FOOT IN FRONT OF THE OTHER. They say not to try anything new on race day. Wise advice. Advice I think I have ignored every trail race I’ve done! Sure, sometimes the results of doing something new on race day have been disastrous: stomach issues, eye-watering chafing, a trip to the hospital emergency room (a story for another day …). But I’ve always learned something and, somehow, lived to tell the tale. Having said that, I did do something audaciously new on my most recent race day. The race? Delirious W.E.S.T. The new? Editing this magazine. And it wasn’t just one race day – there were five. In case you haven’t heard of it, Delirious W.E.S.T.…

stockists

WE DON’T TRUST OUR TRAIL BIBLE WITH ANY OLD RUNNING SHOP STOCKIST. RATHER, OUR STOCKISTS ARE A SPECIAL BREED OF RETAILER WHO HAVE HAD TO MEET STRINGENT REQUIREMENTS TO BE ALLOWED TO SELL TRAIL RUN MAG IN THE FLESH: THEY HAVE TO UNRESERVEDLY, AND WITH EQUAL PARTS BOUNDLESS PASSION AND KNOWLEDGEABLE INSIGHT, BE UTTERLY MAD ABOUT THE TRAIL RUNNING LIFESTYLE. AND SO, IF YOU WANT TO PICK UP A QUICK COPY OF THE MAG (AND NAB YOUR NEXT PAIR OF SINGLETRACK SLAYERS WHILE YOU’RE THERE), WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND THESE GUYS, THEY ARE THE BEST IN THE BIZ, BECAUSE UNLIKE THE OTHER RUNNING SHOPS, THEY GIVE A DAMN ABOUT RUNNING ON DIRT: NEW SOUTH WALES BLUE MOUNTAINS RUNNING CO www.bluemntsrunningco.com.au 19 Ross Street, Glenbrook P: 02 4739 9919 E: info@bluemtnsrunningco.com.au FB: @bluemtnsrunningco Insta: @bluemtnsrunningco TASMANIA FIND YOUR FEET www.findyourfeet.com.au 107 Elizabeth Street, Hobart P:…

aussie grit focus 2020 jacket

If I had written this review last issue, I think I would have had a hard time convincing anyone. The country was on fire, the Scenic Rim in Queensland, where I run a lot of the time, looked like a bleak Martian landscape, and rain was either a joke or a dirty word. What did Dorothea Mackellar say, though? Droughts and flooding rains? Here we are a few months later, and suddenly, that piece of kit you’d almost forgotten about gets pulled out of the closet. In Queensland, it’s still hot enough to run half-naked in the rain, but down south and in New Zealand, it’s time to start thinking about what to do if it’s raining and you want to run. Enter the Aussie Grit Focus 2020 Jacket. There are a…

coros pod

With the introduction of the POD (Performance Optimisation Device), COROS has indicated a bias towards backing its engineers and innovation department. This completely on-brand move was not unforeseeable, given the constant requests online for the integration of power meters, not to mention some competitors having similar devices. The POD is compatible with all COROS watches on the market, and no doubt will be for any future releases. Data outputs include stride ratio, L/R balance, run efficiency, cadence, stride height, ground time, running power and stride length. Of interest to me were L/R balance and run efficiency. L/R balance is relatively self-explanatory. While mine was very even, it crept a little in favour of left dominance at higher speeds or when I was pushing harder. This is of particular interest to me, given…

handful y-back bra

There’s a time and place for bouncing. Trampolines, jumping castles and agonising dinners with the in-laws when you’ve just got to bounce. But bouncing boobs during a run? Not fun. Ever. No. Female runners generally want their sports bras to meet two key criteria: minimal bouncing and no chafing. Sounds easy enough to get right, right? Nope! I have spent years battling the bounce, not to mention chafing that’s the stuff of nightmares. Enter the Handful Y-Back Bra. Its simple yet smart design means there are no hooks, zips, clasps or adjustments to dig into your skin. It’s underwire free yet offers full support with a sturdy but comfortable wide bottom band. The critical feature of this bra is its Y back. Similar in design to a racerback sports bra, it provides a snug…

ultimate direction fk ultra poles

Completing Delirious W.E.S.T. 350km in February sure would have been a whole lot harder without poles. From the 140km mark, Ultimate Direction’s FK Ultra Trekking Poles did not leave my hands. As my legs fatigued and keeping balance on the technical single tracks and sandy slopes became increasingly difficult, these poles kept me upright and moving. UD’s FK Ultra carbon trekking poles are strong yet lightweight. At just 165g per 120cm pole, the 20mm diameter shaft at the top is thicker than most other poles, which typically have an upper diameter of 13mm-14mm. This provides maximum stiffness and strength. The shaft tapers towards the bottom for a smooth swing weight, with aluminium bushings at the joints providing further durability. Collapsible for easy storage and transportation, the poles have a pin-style locking/unlocking mechanism,…
