50 Fantastic greenlaning in Northumberland What do they know that I don’t, sending me into the water first? GEORGE SPOORS, GREENLANER Wow - I thought Neil said there was a ford here? GLENN JACKSON, GREENLANER There is - it’s a submerged Mondeo. IAN FLINT, GREENLANER ‘Your 2021 adventure starts here’ We like to think big at LRO. So, we’ve amassed our decades of greenlaning experience to create the ultimate UK Land Rover drive - the LRO Adventure Trail. This epic route will take you through all the four countries of the UK on great driving roads and fantastic greenlanes, and each instalment will be a great trip in its own right. It’ll be the road less travelled. We’ve kicked off in Northumberland, and what a great place that is to visit - oodles of history, quiet roads, and great greenlanes…

putting on the style

‘THE WORLD DOESN’TNEED ANOTHER LIFTED, QUILTED 110’ OWNER: KEV BALDWIN Kev learned to drive in his dad’s Series III and has never been without a Land Rover of some form ever since then. After a lifetime of tolerating the lack of leg-room behind the wheel of his various Land Rovers, 6ft 5in Kev took it upon himself to do something about it - and the very first MUD product was born. MUD Rails raise the front seats, allowing them to move significantly further back. Kev is also a veteran of overland trips all over the world and drove an off-road route across North America - including ice Roads in northern Canada - in his own Defender. This now spotless Chawton White 110 has been transformed from a comprehensively battered, ex-Spanish quarry mule into some kind…

what exactly is a nas 110?

In 1992, Land Rover needed a second model to expand its tiny American market - which, up to then, consisted only of the Range Rover Classic. US safety legislation had prohibited the import of Defenders en masse, but a limited batch of 500 specially manufactured North-American-spec (hence NAS) 110s was allowed. They were all the same spec with 3.9 EFi V8 petrol engines and five-speed manual gearboxes. Each one cost $40,575 (£31,398) then, which is about $75,273 (£64,169) now. In reality, NAS 110s can reach $150k (£116k) today.…

let the transformation commence

1 FIRST IMPRESSIONS The Defender bore all the signs of a relentless hard life spent bumping around in a Spanish quarry - but at least it was complete. 2 BATTERED AND BRUISED Every single panel was dinged and dented. The front doors were replaced with new, single-piece ones; the rears were re-skinned. 3 BACK-DOOR JOB In order to keep as much of the original vehicle as possible, Kev saved the back door’s frame and re-skinned that too. 4 INTERIOR TRAUMA In contrast to the exterior, which initially looked rough but sort of okay, the interior was quite clearly comprehensively trashed. 5 NOTHING TO SEE HERE Stripping out the entire cabin was the only sensible solution; a lot of the demolition work had already been done, albeit involuntarily! 6 BARE ESSENTIALS Not much more bodywork to remove now, just the front wings.…

refreshed discovery

Land Rover’s mid-term Discovery 5 refresh delivers improvements in three main areas - engines, interior and styling. Let’s start with the engines: being the only current model without a hybrid option, there was an inevitability about where the Discovery line-up would go next. There are now six-cylinder petrol and diesel 48-volt mild-hybrid (MHEV) versions of this versatile family seven-seater. There’s also a 2.0-litre non-hybrid petrol unit. The previous Ford-derived 3.0-litre SDV6 and Land Rover’s 2.0-litre Ingenium SD4 are no longer used - the four new engines are all the latest Euro 6d-compliant Ingenium units. • D250 - 3.0-litre inline 6-cylinder diesel MHEV. • D300 - 3.0-litre inline 6-cylinder diesel MHEV. • P300 - 2.0-litre inline 4-cylinder petrol. • P360, 3.0-litre inline 6-cylinder petrol MHEV. However, in contrast to all other models in the Range Rover and Land…
