lead from (your) behind!

When it comes to sculpting a great body, there’s no question glutes register particularly high on the asset meter (if you’ll pardon the pun). And that’s especially the case with the Oxygen audience — in all of our audience surveys, whether it’s online readers or print readers, you are of one voice: owning a solid, magnificent bottom half scores high on your must-have lists. But today’s desires differ somewhat from those of a decade ago. As we cite in our special More Swerves in Your Curves mix and-match exercise and meal plan (see Page 38), a growing number of you want rounder but no-less-tighter butts — thank you Nicki Minaj, Kim Kardashian, et al! do cardio second

Power it up Hit it hard right out of the gates: A study from the College of New Jersey found that those who worked harder during the first half of their workouts burned up to 23 percent more fat than those who started slowly. STAND UP WHILE YOU READ THIS! If you sit for long hours every day — even if you exercise vigorously on a regular basis — you increase your risk of cancer, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and early death. A 2015 meta-analysis of 47 health studies concluded that people who work out on a steady basis die of any cause, on average, at a rate one-third less than those who don’t exercise at all. However, even those who get in their fair share of training but also sit…

grapefruit = great fruit

The grapefruit diet once received a squirt in the eye from the medical community. However, in a 2014 study performed by University of California, Berkeley, researchers may have at least proved that the subject was worthy of further investigation. The scientists found that mice fed a high-fat diet gained less weight when they drank their fill of sweetened grapefruit juice than those in a group that drank sugar water. Those on the juice also had better measures of metabolic health such as blood sugar and triglyceride levels and insulin sensitivity. In a follow-up study, the researchers let the mice become obese before they gave them grapefruit juice. After about two months, the mice that drank the juice weighed 8 percent less than those that drank water, and they also showed…

the whole (grain) enchilada

Move over, Wonder Bread: A Danish study found that replacing refined grain products with whole-grain ones led to significant fat loss over the course of 12 weeks. University of Copenhagen researchers followed 79 overweight women who were dieting. All the women took in approximately the same number of calories — the only diff erence was in whether they ate refined grains (like white bread) or whole-wheat products. The whole-wheat group not only lost more weight during the three months, but also had better total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol readings. If you want to try it for yourself, look for this on the label: * whole grain (with the name of the grain listed) * whole wheat or other grain stone ground whole (grain) * brown rice * oats, oatmeal * wheatberries If the label says enriched…
