Key birds in spring and summer at Kingley Vale include Blackcap, Lesser Whitethroat, Whitethroat and Nightingale, while autumn and winter are perhaps of most interest with Osprey, Hen Harrier (both on migration), Red Kite, Buzzard, Woodcock, Barn and Tawny Owls, Green Woodpecker, Hobby (on migration), Raven, Firecrest, Goldcrest, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Fieldfare, Redwing, Hawfinch and Bullfinch. Apart from the ancient Yews, other notable species include Yellow Meadow Ant, Hazel Dormouse, Yellow-necked Mouse, Water Shrew, Brown Hare, bats and deer. The chalk grassland is home to many flowering plants, including eleven species of orchid, that form a diverse mosaic of species.
