The Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Thoko Didiza recently announced that South Africa had joined the Generation Equality Action Coalitions, a UN multi-stakeholder initiative focussing on gender-based violence, economic justice and rights.
Speaking during a virtual dialogue about women in agriculture titled ‘Realising women’s equality through agriculture’, she said Germany, Mexico, South Africa, Spain and Sweden, together with other partners, would be co-leaders of the initiative.
“Joining this campaign allows the issue of women’s empowerment to be central in the country’s policies, regulatory reform and programmatic intervention,’’ she said.
Mimie Jacobs, owner of Rosemead farm, a grain farm near Bloemfontein, who had been the victim of violent crime on her own farm, said collaboration was required to improve rural security, especially for women.
