“I love it when the soaps have a special week…” You know, I love it when the soaps have a special week dedicated to one plot – a trip abroad, or perhaps a huge stunt or drama. And this week, we have two huge sets of episodes to savour. First we see Emmerdale’s Marlon head off to Northern Island on his honeymoon – which just happens to be where Paddy’s daddy Bear is working at the moment, and where Kerry’s daughter Amy is currently residing! Holby City Hospital is plunged into darkness this week, after a cyber attack causes a blackout and disables vital equipment – leaving the staff with only their wits to rely on… As both teams from the emergency department and the surgical wards upstairs work together in extremely challenging conditions, the stage is set for a nail-biting two-part crossover special – starting in Casualty on Saturday and continuing into the following episode of Holby City – during which the doctors have to go back to basics if they stand any hope of keeping their charges alive. “All the systems go down and nothing works – so you really see how dependant the hospital is on technology,” explains Holby’s Catherine Russell, who plays Serena, as Inside Soap joins her and several actors…

Holby star Hugh tells us more… “We learn in this crossover that Ric has had a liaison with Elle from Casualty [who’s played by Jaye Griffiths],” he grins. “It was Jaye who told me that, in a previous Casualty episode, she had had to describe in some graphic detail just how they had consummated their romance. We know that Iqra and Habiba are in Walford with a mission to make money, but could their past mistakes be their motivation? Iqra has already confessed that she fled an arranged marriage and owes her father the money for her aborted wedding. THIS POST-APOCALYPTIC drama set during a high-octane street race for freedom across the length of Britain (while avoiding ravenous mutants) knows how ridiculous it is – and thank goodness for that. If it had taken itself seriously, the whole series would have been doomed, but by adopting a cute, self-aware tone it’s ended up being a lot of fun. And those souped-up cars look cool. Plus, it’s a show in which several big-name actors got killed off in the first episode, but Sean Bean’s character is still alive and kicking in episode three.
