Edward Ball’s great-great-grandfather Polycarp Constant Lecorgne died in 1886. But the Confederate carpenter’s memory loomed large in Ball’s suburban New Orleans home as he grew up in the 1960s. My mother was diagnosed with uterine cancer in 2009 and eventually succumbed to the disease in 2015. I became a Stand Up to Cancer Ambassador in 2018 and recently did a PSA designed to educate and encourage cancer patients to explore treatment options available through clinical trials. There are many different clinical trials, and a lot of times that messaging doesn’t get out there, especially to minority communities. I felt it would be a great opportunity for me to lend my voice.
