A BETTER LIFE
LIONEL SHRIVER
Immigration is a hot topic and it’s the driving force behind the plot of Lionel Shriver’s latest novel, A Better Life (Borough Press, £22). It’s set in a realistic New York City in 2023, though certain references are already outdated, thanks to the political landscape shifting drastically under Trump’s presidency. Nevertheless, Shriver’s polemic remains relevant in its opposition of two warring perspectives: the leftist, open-armed liberal versus a sceptical every-man-for-himself approach — but ultimately, who is seeing clearly?
