LATE afternoon on June 2, 2001, preserved No. 306017 was booked on a special working to Chappel & Wakes Colne. It was expected to attend an exhibition at the East Anglian Railway Museum the following day, appearing alongside No. 66502, one of Freightliner’s then new Class 66 locos. Notably, this was believed to be the first time an electric train had appeared on the Marks Tey to Sudbury branch, albeit towed.
During the day leading up to this move, however, the unit was allowed to be used in normal passenger service between Liverpool Street and Shenfield, beginning with an empty stock move from Ilford to Shenfield.
