Giancarlo DiTrapano, the founding editor and publisher of the influential independent press Tyrant Books, died suddenly on March 30. He was 47. Former vice president Mike Pence sold his autobiography to Simon & Schuster. The acquisition was the first book deal for a major figure in the Trump administration with a large publisher. Cevin Bryerman has been promoted to CEO of PWxyz, parent company of PW. Carl Pritzkat has been named COO, while Jim Milliot, Diane Roback, and Jonny Segura have been promoted to senior v-ps. the surge continues

Unit sales of print books rose a remarkable 29.2% in the first quarter of 2021 over the same period in 2020 at outlets that report to NPD BookScan. Though some of that gain was due to the slump in sales that occurred in mid-March last year, most of the increase was due to the surge in book buying that began last spring and carried over into 2021. All six major categories tracked by BookScan had double-digit increases, and all four print formats posted gains. Units rose 24.6% in adult nonfiction, the industry’s largest category. Sales in the home and gardening subcategory, which began to take off late last April, remained strong into the first quarter of 2021, up 54.1% in the period. sales reps adapt to the “new normal”

By most accounts, 2020 was not a good year for publishers’ sales representatives. One longtime commission rep commented, “I have had the most disastrous sales of my career”—and he’s not alone. Maureen Karb, head of Como Sales, which covers the Eastern seaboard, was at a sales conference in New York City in the days leading up to Mar. 11, 2020, when the World Health Organization declared Covid-19 a global pandemic. She said that after she returned home, she had to contact the publishers she just met with and ask them to stop shipping to her stores. fable brings silicon valley to book clubs

Fable is a new platform for online book clubs that allows users to join clubs moderated by experts, authors, and influencers, or to start their own clubs. Fable allows readers to leave comments and share links and highlights with other readers, much like a social media platform, directly in the app, which also serves as an e-reader. A popup sidebar on the app offers the equivalent of group discussions. E-books can be purchased directly on Fable’s proprietary bookstore. The service is free, but a $69 premium annual subscription gives users access to a broader selection of clubs and allows members to host larger clubs. In October 2016, a new independent bookstore opened in Tallahassee, Fla., offering readers a space to enjoy literature and civil conversation just weeks before an acrimonious election put Donald Trump in the White House. DEAL OF THE WEEK Pence Takes His Autobio to S&S In a two-book, world rights agreement, Dana Canedy, senior v-p and publisher at Simon & Schuster, bought world rights to Mike Pence’s autobiography. S&S described it as “the story of Pence’s faith and public service, covering his trajectory from Columbus, Ind., to his time as the second-highest-ranking official in the Trump administration.” The publisher also promised that the former v-p will “address the many pivotal moments of the administration.” David Vigliano and Thomas Flannery at Vigliano Associates represented Pence, and the currently untitled book is tentatively set for 2023.
