serene sitting rooms

Personal style and architectural considerations are priorities when considering the design and layout of a sitting room. However, function is undeniably an important factor too – where some may require a sleek, elegant space for evening drinks and entertaining, others may need a family-friendly room where different generations can come together and relax in each other’s company. How best then to blend these varying elements? We talk to leading designers to glean insights on key projects of theirs and highlight stylish and effective solutions. crafted from nature

When the artist and designer Tom Raffield first discovered the traditional, age-old technique of steam-bending wood to craft into beautiful designs, it was something of a revelatory moment. As a young man, studying for his degree in 3D Sustainability and Design, it proved to be the start of a journey of discovery, where he would continue to develop and understand the process until he knew he could produce everything from seats to tables and lighting using the technique. In 2008 he launched his eponymous company and has since become one of the world leaders in his craft. Raffield realised that, through this ecological technique, he could create intricate curves and twists, mimicking organic shapes and celebrating the very thing that inspires him – nature. But it was not an easy process.…

inviting kitchens

Whilst a kitchen plays an important utilitarian role in any home, not all homeowners want it to look overtly practical. Indeed, many prefer the functionality of the space to be underplayed in terms of the design aesthetic, seeking instead to create a space that is inviting and characterful. This allows it to serve as a welcoming backdrop for entertaining or daily dining as well as for having areas for preparing meals and the inevitable clearing up. Our kitchen special showcases truly beautiful and carefully considered schemes from interior and kitchen designers who generously share some of their design insights and processes. Professional designers know how to incorporate unexpected colour and pattern into a scheme, how to maximise the impact of architectural features or reinstate period charm, look at fresh ways…
