editor’s letter

I first fell in love with the Scottish landscape as a child, several years before I’d ever travelled there, inspired by the legend of Mary, Queen of Scots. Antonia Fraser’s evocative biography of the doomed Queen conjured up Mary’s life for me, as well as her untimely death; but I was also fascinated by the places associated with her birth, ascension to the throne and imprisonment: Linlithgow Palace, Stirling Castle and Loch Leven. As is evident in our latest cover story, the Town & Country team has been similarly stirred by the drama of Mary, and Scotland’s tempestuous history and wild beauty; and I very much hope that you will be as enthralled as we were, following in her footsteps on a journey where the past is as alive as…

contributors – spring 2019

ELIZABETH-JANE BURNETT The Devon-born poet’s love of wild swimming inspired her acclaimed 2017 debut collection Swims. She describes the coming of spring in a lyrical piece on page 70. Burnett’s latest book, The Grassling, is out in March. The springtime event you are most looking forward to ‘My first dip in the river, when the water doesn’t sting with cold.’ Your favourite walk ‘My parents’ Devon garden offers all the drama of buds bursting into flower.’ Your ideal spring menu ‘I look forward to the sprouting of sorrel. It can be a little bitter but I love its lemon zinginess in a soup or salad.’ An imaginative wedding present ‘A tree. In Celtic mythology, birches are good for new ventures.’ LUCY CARR-ELLISON AND JEMIMA JONES The founders of Tart London, the bespoke catering company that counts Kate Moss…

prince louis’ first-birthday party

A cheeky crown from Fable Heart is the ideal accoutrement for a little prince. For young princesses, polka dots and a celestial sequined wand are all you need for magical celebrations. There’s no such thing as too many decorations for a first birthday: garlands and confetti-filled balloons from Meri Meri will add the necessary festive touches, while a Steiff teddy bear will be a well-mannered party guest. the boatrace

How to look chic and stay warm on the banks of the Thames in April while cheering your side on to victory? As ever, the Duchess of Cambridge is your role model. She made several elegant appearances training with a women’s dragon-boat crew on the very same river, so take inspiration from her long-standing penchant for nautical pieces with a Loro Piana crew neck, perhaps embellished with a pair of Bulgari earrings evoking the crest of a wave – or the wake of the winning boat. badminton horse trials

The horses are the stars of the show at this three-day event, but spectators should look stylish, too. Let the discipline of the day be your guide: a delicate Valentino blouse embodies the grace of Friday’s dressage; a tweed Purdey coat and Hermès headscarf are essential equipment for following the cross-country; and a pair of Cartier pendant earrings perfectly echo the glamour of Sunday’s show-jumping finale. goodwood members’ meeting

The most exclusive event of the classic motorsport calendar takes place as the estate’s daffodils come into flower. Embellish traditional sporting attire – including Hermès’ leather driving gloves, flat Crockett & Jones brogues and a Cartier watch to time 0–60mph to the nanosecond – with some Niquesa sapphires, to reflect a similarly spring-like blue sky.
