general let-down

AS I WRITE, it has been more than a month since Natural England (NE) was forced to revoke the general licences issued for the control of pest birds following a legal challenge by Wild Justice. New general licences have been released for control of the woodpigeon, carrion crow and Canada goose in some circumstances, but unfortunately, these have been described by shooting organisations as “unfit for purpose”. The move has been disastrous for farmers who need to protect crops and livestock, and for gamekeepers and conservation organisations trying to protect nesting birds. This was a massive own goal for Chris Packham and his Wild Justice cronies, as they ended up with more blood on their hands than any shooter, but instead of taking the moral high ground in what was shaping…

laminated lothario

Accuracy, consistency and reliability are the primary factors that need to be taken into consideration when buying a new rifle. The way the gun looks usually comes further down the pecking order of desirable features. But what if you want it all? Brocock thinks you can, and has released its latest version of the Bantam in a glorious new stock. This particular handle is made for Brocock by Italian woodworking wizard Minelli, and it really is on a mission to seduce any airgun shooters that set eyes upon it. Laminated stocks are made of several thin layers of wood that have been dyed with different colours and are bonded together under pressure. This creates a dense and stable composite stock that, in this case, just happens to look rather stylish as…

news in brief quick shots...

THE CHANGING OF THE GUARD Rowan Engineering produces a huge array of aftermarket accessories for an equally huge array of air rifles, ranging from QD studs to adjustable butt pads and hamsters. One of Rowan’s simplest, but most elegant, swap-in components is a CNC-machined trigger guard, with replacements available for most Weihrauch spring rifles, including the HW 35, 77, 80, 97, 95 and 99. These guards are usually machined from high-grade brass or aluminium stock, but did you know they’re also available with a luxurious glossy black finish? If you order online (www.rowanengineering.com), select the brass version, then make a note in the ‘Additional Instructions’ box that you would like a black guard instead. Alternatively, contact Rowan directly on 012 9525 1188. SIROCCO BLOWS INTO BRITAIN AirForceOne has a new full-power break-barrel springer…

petite pistol

SIG Sauer has launched a new micro-compact, high-capacity CO2-powered BB gun called the P365. It’s based on a 9mm handgun of the same name, which, due to its minuscule make-up, is used for concealed carry in those countries that allow it. The BB version features realistic blowback action, and the drop-down magazine holds twelve 4.5mm (.177l) steel BBs, as well as the 12g CO2 capsule for fast reloading. The P365 BB pistol has similar balance and handling characteristics to the centrefire model, and SIG says the new BB gun will give 9mm P365 owners who carry one for personal protection a “training tool of the highest quality when a trip to the range for live fire is not possible”. Most of us in the UK won’t be needing it as a self defence…

the mighty atom

MTC has announced the second optic in its SWAT Prismatic range – a 10x30 model called the Atom. Like its 12x50 sibling, the Atom is a little scope that’s big on technology, measuring just 122mm from the 30mm objective to the eyepiece. SWAT stands for Super Wide-Angle Technology, meaning the Atom offers a wider field of view than a conventional 10x scope. It also features ultra-short eye relief and a concertina-style rubber eyecup. Its external elevation and windage turrets offer mil-rated click adjustments, are lockable and feature resettable verniers. The Atom has sidewheel parallax adjustment down to 10 yards, and uses MTC’s SCB2 multi-stadia reticle, which can be illuminated to one of 10 brightness settings. The objective lens housing allows the fitting of many aftermarket Night Vision DSAs (Day Scope Adapters), while there’s…
