a manner of speaking

For much of my life, I had a deep-seated fear of public speaking. The anxiety tiptoed in during middle school, then dug in deep by my early 20s. In college, I was set to give a presentation in a journalism class. Right before I started, my professor had walked out of the room to take a call. When I put my note cards on the podium, a large wooden piece fell from the top of it and crashed to the ground. There was something about the shock of the loud sound and the sudden flush of embarrassment that broke me. Nerves all along my scalp fired. I felt strangely, irreparably damaged. I gathered my notes and sat back down without speaking a word. The class sat in awkward silence for…

the shining

We haven’t seen lip shellacs this sheer, this patent-shiny, this glitter-flecked since the early aughts. Just don’t call it a comeback—it’s a glow-up. Gone are the sticky, flyaway-hairtrapping ways of their forebears. In their place: smooth, ungloppy formulas and specks of sparkle that are at the perfect midpoint between full-on glitter and shimmer. Apply alone for an “I’ve just eaten from the Garden of Eden and have remnants of enchanted nectar on my face” vibe or swipe atop a favorite lipstick shade for a little Rocketman magic—not to mention slightly fuller-looking lips. zendaya’s take

Actor Zendaya Coleman is a true beauty girl—she’s worn every hairstyle imaginable (“My style is not to have one”) and sometimes does her own makeup for red-carpet events. The new face of Lancôme L’Absolu Rouge Ruby—a collection of lipsticks in almost every variation on vermilion (plus a few lighter shades)—reflects on how beauty has shaped her life. On evocative scents: “A certain smell can bring you back. Insect repellent reminds me of when I went on my mom’s outdoor science camps every year. She was an inner-city school teacher and would raise money to take her kids. Students come back and say thank you—[education] is the gift you can never take away from somebody.” On being zen: “For me, [applying] makeup eases my mind. It’s therapeutic; it calms me down.” On scars: “I…

in the pink

1 Burberry Her Blossom This dreamy scent balances rich sandalwood with demure peony and smolder-y musk. 2 Bottega Veneta Illusione At first hit, it’s kind of primal, with olive wood and tonka bean. After a few minutes, though, it gets lighter, more citrusy (bergamot and orange blossom, to be exact), and low-key enough to wear all day. 3 Ralph Lauren Beyond Romance If you want to smell like rose, jasmine, and lily, consider yourself bouquet’d. We like that the musk and resin roughen it up a touch.…

midcentury modern

When I was young and having problems with my teeth, very, very skinny, not feeling pretty, and being bullied at school, I would never have thought that L’Oréal Paris would one day ask me, at 51 years old, to become an ambassador. It’s a miracle. Singing was a way for me to express myself, to feel supported and not judged. Over the last couple of years, I feel like I’ve grown strong and happy through dance, through friendship, through motherhood. It’s inside out. But the things we put on ourselves: the cream, the hair color, the conditioner, the nails, the makeup, a good outfit—it changes my demeanor. I’ve never felt as beautiful, or so in charge. When you do feel in charge, it gives you an extra voice. Even though…

crown, meet glory

Smoothing the baby hairs that halo my tight coils in hot, sticky summer weather? Mission impossible. But Pantene Pro-V Gold Series Edge Tamer is up—make that down—for the challenge. The pomade is arganrich (to slicken flyaways) and clear (no white flakes) and provides subtle shine. (So many edge tamers unnecessarily amp up the wattage. I want to flatten my hairline, not blind the masses.) The only finishing touch needed? A stiff edge brush to give my hair the swooping silhouette I like best—and it stays put, no humid plot twists.…
