take a walk on the wild side

If the contents of my inbox are anything to go by, Artists & Illustrators’ readers love to paint animals. These pictures are always a delight to receive: nothing brightens the spirits after a gloomy winter commute quite like switching on your computer to find a beautiful creature painted with passion looking back at you. As the national passion for David Attenborough documentaries attests, our capacity to be awed by nature’s majesty is inexhaustible, so it’s no wonder artists are driven to capture its beauty. COVER STAR I am sending a photo of my painting, which I have just submitted to the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition 2018. I have been painting magazine covers since 2015. I wanted to focus on covers I find beautiful and cute but also the content was somewhat important. I need to be interested in some articles. Aurélie, via email THE WONDER OF WATERCOLOUR It’s now seven years since I’ve began to play with watercolours. I say ‘play’ because I am self-taught in every aspect of art. Watercolour helped me…

the art of recovery

I started this oil painting in October, but fell seriously ill with diabetes and an ensuing heart attack. While in hospital, my eyesight changed from shortsighted to longsighted overnight. On leaving hospital I was determined to finish my painting. I found it took my mind away from health concerns. There were times when my changing eyesight made it hard to focus on detail but I persevered and completed it as my eyesight and health were starting to return to normal. Want to sell your art in 2018? Our columnist has all the answers for dealing with clients. Rachael Broadwell Good advice. My pessimistic nature usually leads me to all sorts of assumptions about the motives of clients who make unreasonable demands. My conflict-avoiding nature leads me usually to just comply with them, haha.
