get creative with your time

If you’re anything like me, you’ll find it’s much easier to be productive during the long summer days. I spend the winter dreaming of lounging in the sunshine but, as soon as the chance arrives, I quickly get bored and, instead, itch to put those precious extra hours of daylight to good use. Having more time to spend doing the things that you love is one of the great joys of summer, whether it’s finally reading that book you’ve been eyeing for months, starting on a new painting project or exploring amazing art exhibitions. We’ve dedicated our special summer issue to helping you make the most of the season. Our great contributors have put together a raft of bite-size challenges (page 51), which can be tackled in a few hours…

ANIMAL AMBITION I wanted to say how wonderful Portfolio Plus is. It is giving me a chance to display my work online in an amazing community of artists. I am 23 and a self-taught artist and illustrator living in the beautiful countryside of Cornwall. I am also very passionate about the world that we live in. I’ve recently been made redundant from my spectacular job as a glass engraver and I decided it was a sign I should dedicate myself full-time to art. I want to be able to inspire younger people and support charities with my work. It is a dream to open an animal shelter supported by sales of my artwork. Leah Ollsson, via email It’s great to hear Portfolio Plus is working for you, Leah. Signing up for an account is…

life back at the easel

Having taken a break from painting for nearly 25 years, I decided to return to it recently after giving up my full-time job in an office to become a carer for my husband. I am loving painting again and have even sold a few of my works online. I mainly paint bright, bold and vibrant abstracts, and recently have come across a new technique of acrylic pours, which gives an amazing result. This is a large 100x75cm floral abstract that I recently painted, called Californian Poppies. I have also been accepted to exhibit three of my paintings at Oriel Bodfari Gallery in North Wales throughout the month of July. This will be my first exhibition so I am very excited, as well as a little nervous. Susan Wooler, Talacre, Holywell…

Mark Peverley (Pev):Bit of alla prima plein air painting with oil on linen… it took six hours to paint in my backyard. Step-by-step guide: How to layer foliage. Artist Matt Jeanes shows you how to approach a mass of leaves in watercolour. Geraldine Walker: Fabulous ‘how to layer foliage’. I hadn’t realised masking fluid could be laid down after each layer dried. This tutorial will help enormously. ANNA AND ELENA BALBUSSO This beautiful frontispiece of the Countess Olivia for the Folio Society’s recent edition of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night saw its creators, Milan-based Anna and Elena Balbusso, shortlisted for this year’s V&A Illustration Awards in the book illustration category. The multi award-winning duo work together as Anna+Elena=Balbusso in the kind of professional harmony that’s probably only possible for identical twins. Their personalities complement each other, they say, so their process is one of continuous interaction and sharing which ensures that everything they produce is a joint effort. “We can start the project together and then divide the tasks,” say Anna and Elena. “We talk a lot before starting a new project but, if we disagree about something, we discuss and mediate.” But the pair don’t have precise rules for…
