Pass special forces selection Successfully completing demanding military training is more mental than physical, indicates a recent study in the US. Published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research mHealth and uHealth, the study aimed to determine predictors of success or failure in elite military training. Only 64 of the 121 US Marines and sailors passed a truly gruelling selection course. Researchers found there was no correlation between finishing and performance on physical training standards and nor did physical markers such as heart rate or sleep status play a role. Instead, those who identified themselves as extroverted and having a positive affect – the ability to cultivate a joyful, confident attitude – were most likely to successfully complete the course. Eat fat A study of the genetic condition familial hypercholesterolemia, which causes people to have cholesterol levels two to four times higher than the average person, has discovered that doctors have been doling out the incorrect advice for decades. Since 1950, sufferers were instructed to eat less food from animal sources, such as meat, eggs and cheese, and to avoid coconut oil. But the new study, published in the journal BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine, found no evidence to support those claims. “Our study showed that a more ‘heart healthy’ diet is one low in sugar, not saturated fat,” says the lead scientist. The study’s authors concluded that following a low-carb diet is most effective for people at an increased risk of heart disease, such as those who are overweight, hypertensive and diabetic. Stretch for life Do you stretch? You should. Here’s why. Researchers at the University of Milan, Italy, have found that a mere 12 weeks of easy-to-administer passive stretching (i.e. using an external force like another person or gravity to stretch you) five times per week helps improve blood flow by making it easier for your arteries to dilate and decreasing their stiffness, thereby reducing the likelihood of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Researchers evaluated the effect of passive stretching on the blood flow locally and in the upper arm. They found that the arteries in both the lower leg and upper arm had increased blood flow and dilation when stimulated, along with decreased arterial stiffness.
