A series of grand celebrations were held on October 1 in Beijing to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). They included a grand rally at Tiananmen Square where President Xi Jinping, also General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, made an important speech. A military parade and a mass civilian pageantry followed the rally and an evening gala and fireworks show were held at the square that night. New Natural Reserves China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), the country’s largest oil and gas producer and supplier, has explored new petroleum and gas reserves, the company said on September 29. It discovered an oilfield with over 1 billion tons of reserves in northwest China, with newly added proven oil reserves of 358 million tons and expected reserves of 693 million tons, said CNPC. SCIENTIST HONORED FOR GREAT CONTRIBUTION Agricultural scientist Yuan Longping, known as the father of hybrid rice, was awarded the Medal of the Republic on September 29, along with seven other prominent figures for their outstanding contributions to the construction and development of the People’s Republic of China. Born in Qianyang, central China’s Hunan Province, in 1930, Yuan graduated from Southwest Agriculture College in 1953 and devoted himself to agricultural education and research.
